Balloon ride lifts boy beyond cancer | KVAL CBS 13 - News, Weather ...

PHILOMATH, Ore. - Stacy Pinckard watched from the ground as her son Logan went up, up and away in a beautiful hot air balloon.

"There he goes!" she said. "Yeah! Logan!"

The smiling 6-year-old's dream was finally coming true after years of what at times felt like a nightmare.
?
In September 2008, Logan came down with a cold that he couldn't shake.

His mom took him to the emergency room in February 2009.

"The ER doctor, he came into the room and said, 'I'm about to change your life,' " she said.

Doctors diagnosed Logan with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He was taken immediately to Emmanual Legacy Hospital in Portland.

Logan started chemo therapy less than 24 hours after his diagnoses.

"The doctors said if it had been another 24 hours, he would have been in the intensive care and we could have lost him," Pinckard said.

Logan nicknamed his IV bag Frank. The two soldiered through two years of chemo.

Amidst the struggle, the family got some good news: the Make-A-Wish Foundation wanted to give Logan something to look forward to when he felt better.

Logan said he wanted a ride in a hot air balloon.

"I saw a hot air balloon," he said, "when we were going up to the hospital."

In October 2010, Make-A-Wish sent Logan and his family to New Mexico for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. >>> Photos from the Fiesta

"I was just thinking we'd go locally," Pinckard said, "but they think so much bigger than I do."

The family spent five days there.

Logan has since turned 7 - and is living free of cancer.

"He's got tons of energy and is overall pretty happy," Pinckard said.

And he has a collection of more recent happy memories and photos between him and chemo, thanks to Make-A-Wish.
