Apple's Strong iPhone Sales Mask Falling Revenue Per Unit As Gross Margins Contract

CUPERTINO, CA - OCTOBER 04: Apple CEO Tim Coo...

The market is waiting for Tim Cook to reveal the next big thing, until then, strong iPhones sales will do ?- Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife

Tim Cook was probably breathing a sigh of relief as shares in Apple Apple took off after a solid fiscal third quarter earnings beat on Tuesday.? And while investors were rejoicing from a welcome jump in the stock price, Apple continues to face intense margin pressure, particularly as its marquee iPhones and iPads saw continued erosion in revenues per unit.? Without the release of some bombshell new products, it will be different for Tim Cook to keep the wind blowing behind?Apple?s sails.

It?s been a difficult few months for Apple?s management and investors since last September, as concern over the company?s future helped wipe out about 40% of its market capitalization.? A big part of the problem has to do with margin erosion, as it becomes increasingly difficult for the company co-founded by Steve Jobs to squeeze higher profits from its cash cow product, the iPhone.

Gross margins continued to contract during Apple?s fiscal third quarter, Tuesday?s earnings release showed, both on a sequential and a yearly basis.? At 36.9%, margins are nearly 700 basis points off their levels last year.

While Apple saw its iPhone shipments jump 20% to 31.2 million, beating the consensus estimate by a wide margin and helping the company beat profit forecasts, increased competition is clearly taking a toll on profitability. ?Samsung and other Android-powered smartphones provide different, and in some cases, cheaper alternatives to Apple?s iPhones, while the return of the Blackberry and the prospects of Windows powered phones could make it harder to gain share.

This fact is clearly expressed in Apple?s supplemental documents, where they break out revenue and unit metrics per device.? A year ago, Apple was making $607.85 per iPhone in revenue, while today the company reported $581.10 per unit.? The same fact shows up with iPads, Apple second-best selling device, with 14.6 million units shipped in the third quarter.? Apple now makes $436.07 in revenue per iPad, a 15% decline from a year ago.

Interestingly, Apple saw increases in average revenue per unit in two of their least loved products.? While iPod shipments tanked 32% to 4.57 million from a year ago, Apple now records $160.43 per unit, compared to $157.01 previously.? And amid talks of the end of the PC era, with shipments ticking down to 3.8 million, Apple saw revenues per unit grow 6.2% to $1,303.41.

Apple has clearly relied on the iPhone as their main product over the past several years, also benefiting from the rise of the tablet and the dominance of their iPads.? But with margins per product declining, and competition becoming intense, it will become increasingly difficult for Tim Cook & Co. to deliver growth levels seen in previous years.

In the press release, Tim Cook stated, ?we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014,? while in the conference call, he noted he doesn?t believe the high-end smartphone market is saturated. ?Cook will have to put his money where his mouth is if he wants to prove he?s right.

Beyond the unexpected jump in iPhone sales, Tuesday?s earnings release revealed other bright spots.? With Apple?s cash stash rising to $146.6 billion, it is encouraging to see research and development spend jump 33.6% in the nine months to June 29, hitting $3.3 billion.? Furthermore, revenues from iTunes, software, and services surged 25% to $3.99 billion, becoming the fastest growing product by far over the past 12 months.

Investors were clearly pleased with Apple?s fiscal third quarter, rewarding the company with a substantial share price increase in the post-market session.? The stock did slowly begin to make its way lower, though, and by 6:00 PM in New York was trading up 3.5% to $433.60.

In zombies, Israelis and Arabs find common enemy

(AP) ? In one of the central scenes of the summer blockbuster movie "World War Z," Israeli troops funnel Palestinian refugees to safety in Jerusalem behind a massive concrete wall. There, the Arabs and Jews embrace, dance and sing ? shortly before they are all engulfed by bloodthirsty zombies.

Even for such an over-the-top work of science fiction, in which billions of people come back from the dead as horrific zombies to terrorize Earth, one of the most improbable plotlines of the film is that Israelis and Palestinians are fighting on the same side.

Granted, the film assumes that a post-apocalyptic world and a supernatural common enemy are needed to achieve such harmony. But the image of an elusive Mideast peace, coupled with the film's overall positive portrayal of Israel, have not been lost among the region's war-weary moviegoers.

"It's a fantasy, and it seems ridiculous to those who live here, but it is still heartwarming to see Israelis and Palestinians coming together," said Yehuda Stav, a movie critic for the Israeli daily newspaper Yediot Ahronot.

At the core of the cinematic coexistence lies a towering barrier Israel is praised for building to keep out zombies and protect inhabitants of the Holy Land ? Jews and Arabs alike. In reality, Israel's separation barrier with the West Bank ? which Israel says is meant to keep out Palestinian suicide bombers ? is much smaller but much more contentious. Palestinians call it a symbol of occupation that steals their land, hinders their movement and damages their crops.

In the film, Israel is praised for its savvy, survival instincts and peaceful intentions. It is credited with predicting the zombie invasion and preparing proper defenses, making it one of only two nations to prevent a lethal outbreak.

The other, North Korea, adopts a more draconian solution: It extracts the teeth of all its citizen to prevent people from biting each other and spreading the deadly zombie virus.

The movie depicts the Israeli military as courageous and resourceful, the Israeli people as inviting and humane. Even Israel's often criticized system of West Bank checkpoints is portrayed as an effective tool to protect both sides.

"If it weren't for the zombies in the background, you'd think this was an engineered campaign of the Defense Ministry to strengthen Israel's status in the world," Israeli movie critic Chen Hadad wrote in City Mouse magazine. The movie opened in Israel last week.

Such a futuristic Israel in "World War Z" has sparked outrage in the real Arab world, where bloggers and moviegoers have slammed the film as a love song to Israel.

"It's free propaganda for Israel at a time when it occupies other people," complained Ramzi Taweel, a 38-year-old Palestinian cartoonist from Ramallah in the West Bank. "It portrays Israel as a moral power that protects human beings. It justifies the wall. ... The Israeli occupation army in the movie is a humane army that protects the world."

In Lebanon, it is showing in theaters, but some of the Israel scenes have been censored or edited out. It also has been widely distributed in the Gulf, where it has received some thumbs down.

"I don't think it was trying to justify Israel's occupation, but it was glorifying the Israelis by emphasizing peace and harmony of the two nations, which is far from the truth," moviegoer Aleena Khan told the Dubai-based Gulf News. "It was a very rose-tinted version of what the relationship between the Israelis and Palestinians actually is."

But even the fictional love fest comes at a cost.

(Spoiler alert: Readers who have not seen the movie may want to read no further.)

Since the zombies are drawn to noise, the raucous Israeli-Palestinian celebrations prove to be their demise. Their joint rendition of a popular Hebrew song of peace wakes the undead from their slumber, and they ultimately catapult over the wall and bite everything in sight.

Such scenes have raised philosophical debates in the blogosphere about whether the movie is actually for or against Israel's real-life separation barrier.

The setting of "World War Z" migrates to Jerusalem after its hero, Gerry Lane, played by Brad Pitt, arrives to figure out how the Israelis have created a safe zone from zombies. There he meets the chief of Israel's Mossad spy agency, who cites the experiences of the Holocaust, the 1972 massacre of Israeli Olympians in Munich and the surprise war Arabs launched on Israel the following year as lessons that taught the Jewish state to prepare for the unexpected. The spymaster tells Pitt's character that Israel envisioned the threat because officials are encouraged to play devil's advocate, with someone offering a dissenting view if everyone else agrees.

Once pandemonium breaks loose, Pitt manages to escape thanks to a cunning, courageous female soldier, played by Israeli actress Daniella Kertesz, who helps him save the world. Aside from her name, Segen, which is actually Hebrew for the rank of lieutenant, the Israeli depictions are fairly accurate. Though shot in Malta, the scenes appear authentic, as do the street signs, the uniforms and the characters' Hebrew accents.

The rare Hollywood focus on Israel has elicited local pride, with crowds cheering at the sight of the Israeli flag and giggling during Hebrew dialogue.

"It shows that we are strong, we fight to the end and don't give up, but also are willing to help others," Ohad Ben-Aharon, a 19-year-old soldier in the Israeli air force, said after a recent screening in Jerusalem. "It's fictional, but there is also an optimistic message ? that there can be peace."

Another moviegoer was Mark Regev, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's spokesman.

His takeaway?

"We hope the Palestinians indeed agree to live in peace with Israel before the zombies invade."

Chocolate: The Scent That Could Save Struggling Bookstores -

178 Flares Filament.io Made with Flare More Info'> 178 Flares ?

Great news for independent booksellers striving to keep their shops profitable in an Amazon-dominated marketplace. Researchers in Belgium have discovered a simple, inexpensive way to keep customers in the store longer and, quite possibly, boost sales.

They report shoppers are more likely to engage in leisurely browsing?and ultimately purchase books in certain popular genres, including romance novels?if the store is infused with the scent of chocolate.

Writing in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, a research team led by Lieve Douc? of Hasselt University describes a 10-day experiment conducted in a general-interest bookstore in Belgium.

?Retailers can make use of pleasant ambient scents to improve the store environment, leading consumers to explore the store.?

For approximately half of its open-for-business hours (either morning or afternoon, depending upon the specific day), the scent of chocolate was dispersed into the store from two locations. The smell was subtle enough that it wasn?t immediately noticeable, but strong enough so that it could be instantly identified once it was pointed out.

Researchers tracked the actions of every fifth customer to enter the store?a total of 201 people. They report that when the scent was activated, shoppers showed a greater tendency to take their time, check out a variety of titles, and/or chat with an employee.

Specifically, ?customers were 2.22 times more likely to closely examine multiple books when the chocolate scent was present in the store, compared with the control condition,? they write.

In addition, when the aroma was present, shoppers were less likely to search out one specific book and take it directly to the cash register. Something about the store?s environment made them want to hang out a bit longer than they perhaps had planned.

The researchers tracked sales of books in four popular genres. A panel of students had previously ranked two of them (food and drink and romance novels) as congruent with the smell of chocolate, and another two (history books and mysteries/crime thrillers) as particularly incongruent with that aroma. Altogether, 119 of the 201 tracked shoppers bought at least one book in one of those categories.

They report sales for books in the first category increased by an impressive 40 percent when the chocolate smell was in the air. Perhaps even more encouragingly, those in the second category also rose, by a more modest but still substantial 22 percent, over the hours when the store was scentless.

Interestingly, the customers were more likely to check out the crime thrillers and history volumes when the aroma was absent. The scent of chocolate apparently steered people away from those genres.

But after controlling for the gender of the observed shoppers, sales of those books increased anyway during the chocolate-scented hours, apparently because those who did peruse the mystery or history aisles were more likely to buy multiple volumes.

These results lead the authors to offer some practical advice: ?Retailers can make use of pleasant ambient scents to improve the store environment, leading consumers to explore the store.? Ideally, they add, the scents should be congruent with the merchandise on sale?say, the salty smell of the sea for a surf shop.

It?s certainly worth a try for hard-pressed independent bookstores?or even for a certain struggling chain. Indeed, the customer-pleasing power of chocolate might even inspire thoughts of a merger. Who wouldn?t want to shop at Barnes and Nestl?s?

Claas Acquires Chinese Agricultural Machinery Manufacture

On 16th July, a contract confirming this was signed by the Chinese shareholder and Claas. As is usually the case with transactions of this kind, the conclusion of the contract is contingent upon obtaining approval from the national authorities, among others.

Dr. Theo Freye and Jinying Ma

Dr. Theo Freye, Spokesman of the CLAAS Executive Board;
Jinying Ma, Chairwoman Shandong Jinyee Maschinery Manufacture Co. Ltd.

The spokesperson for Claas management, Dr. Theo Freye, said "China is the largest and fastest-growing market for agricultural engineering in Asia ? a market in which Claas has been represented for many years. By acquiring the majority share in Jinyee, we are creating local production capacity for machines aimed at the Chinese market. Through expanding our product range, we anticipate creating impetus for growth for Claas in other markets and Claas locations. We have production plants in the Western and Central European markets, as well as in the USA, Russia and India. Purchasing a production plant in China is another step towards Asia ? a step that fits in with our long-term focus on this area."

The mechanisation of agriculture in China is developing rapidly; driven by the changing demands for food (towards greater consumption of meat), the growing population and migration. Claas wants to use this acquisition to take advantage of the enormous potential for growth that it provides.

Jinyee produces various harvesting machines, mainly for the maize and wheat harvest, at two main sites in Gaomi and Daqing. Each of the sites lies right in the heart of a main agricultural region ? one in Central China and the other in North-Eastern China.

AEG attacks projection of $1B earnings for Jackson

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An expert who projected Michael Jackson could have earned more than $1 billion on his comeback concerts testified Tuesday that his analysis didn't include a breakdown of the singer's yearly earnings over his lifetime and projected a longer concert tour than the superstar had ever performed.

Arthur Erk, a certified public accountant who is an expert in musicians' royalties, said his analysis didn't take into consideration figures detailing Jackson's spending over the years.

His projection that Jackson would have earned between $1.1 billion and $1.5 billion if he performed a 37-month, 260-show tour and crafted a Las Vegas show came under attack Tuesday by a lawyer for concert promoter AEG Live LLC. He said his figures were a conservative estimate of Jackson's earning potential if he had lived.

AEG Live attorney Sabrina Strong attacked Erk's projections, saying they were inconsistent with Jackson's historical spending, earnings or figures of how many sold-out shows Jackson would have performed.

"It wasn't a matter of history," Erk said. "This was going to be a final extravaganza. He was going to do a blowout tour, he would have earned a lot of money."

Erk is testifying for Jackson's mother in her lawsuit against AEG Live, claiming the company is liable for her son's death because it failed to properly investigate the doctor who administered a fatal overdose of an anesthetic propofol in June 2009. At the time of his death, Jackson was preparing for 50 comeback concerts in London called "This Is It," but there was the possibility the singer would have embarked on a worldwide tour.

The accountant based his calculations on documents prepared by AEG, but on cross-examination conceded that the company never projected the singer would earn more than $1 billion after the "This Is It" shows opened. He said he didn't have information regarding Jackson's earnings over his lifetime.

Erk's estimate contemplated Jackson receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in merchandise, endorsement deals and royalties from a Las Vegas show based on his music and archival footage.

Strong showed Erk a chart that showed that Jackson's three previous solo tours comprised 275 shows over a 10-year span. She challenged Erk's contention that he was being conservative by projecting Jackson would have performed 260 shows over a three-year period.

Strong also attacked Erk's calculation that Jackson would have spent $134 million between ages 50 and 65. She cited testimony from Jackson's former business managers and accountants in depositions that Jackson was historically outspending his earnings by millions of dollars each year.

Jackson died an estimated $400 million in debt.

Strong also questioned Erk whether he should have taken into account Jackson's reputation after his acquittal on child molestation charges and when he dangled his infant son Blanket off a hotel balcony in 2002. Erk said those didn't matter in his projections.

Plaintiff's attorney Brian Panish said Erk's projections were based on AEG's plans to do a worldwide tour, and the company had no qualms about spending millions of dollars to prepare for the "This Is It" shows.

He said he planned to show that some of AEG's points brought out on cross-examination were not right.

"We're not done yet," Panish said.

After a 14-year absence, my return to golf's pinnacle -- Pine Valley -- reaffirms its greatness

Pine Valley

Larry Lambrecht

The 161-yard, par-3 10th at Pine Valley, the No. 1 course in the world.

Before my visit this past week, I hadn't been to Pine Valley in 14 years. I wasn't sure I wanted to go back.

With my increasingly fragile golf game, my ego was certain to be battered. Did I really want that? No course more fairly, but ruthlessly, exposes weaknesses in one's arsenal of skills than Pine Valley. Yet no course so perfectly offers the parade of rewards available for superior ballstriking. At round's end, I was bloodied, but not beaten. Just the thrill of reexamining Pine Valley's matchless holes was enough to sustain me as my score mounted.

There's no secret as to why Pine Valley has been ranked No. 1 in the World by GOLF Magazine since 1985. As architect Tom Doak once expressed, "Deep down, it's still golf's most awesome experience, a shining example of golf architecture in the raw so that even the color-blind can understand it. The course possesses more truly outstanding holes than any other I've seen."

So, there's the rub. It doesn't fit Alister MacKenzie's definition of an "ideal" course, because honestly, it's not suited for lesser golfers. There's simply too much trouble and too many forced carries for all to enjoy, let alone finish.

So be it.

It's not meant to be for everybody. Doak is right. If you can carry a ball 150 yards in the air, there is no better experience in golf.

For those who that haven't had the pleasure, very private Pine Valley is situated 45 minutes southeast of central Philadelphia, in New Jersey. You enter the grounds via a modest lane that begins at an intersection that houses a bank on one corner, an amusement park on the other. Perfect. You can bet your last dollar that Pine Valley will yield the wildest golf ride of your life.

Uniquely beautiful and brutal, the No. 1-ranked course in the world serves up multiple forced carries on holes that hopscotch from one island of turf to the next. It's an unforgettable gallop through trees, sand and scrub. Hit it crooked and freakishly hard recoveries await, but make no mistake, you'll get that opportunity, because the superb caddies are remarkably adept at locating your errant shots. Some say wading into the scrub is half the fun. Not me.

Even though it had been 14 years, I hadn't forgotten these individual holes. Once you've played them, they're burned into your brain for life. However, here are my five other perceptions I took away from this visit:

5. Pine Valley's Short course, an Ernie Ransome-Tom Fazio design is totally worthy as a warm-up, or as a second round. Not surprisingly, the isolated holes are really hard, and a handful of them brilliantly mimic shots you'll face on the big course. I first played it when it opened in 1992 and thought the replicas were cool. Today, however, I wish there were more originals. The property deserves it.

4. Pine Valley has only two par 5s, the 7th and the 15th. Best known for its "Hell's Half-Acre" sand feature that bisects the fairway, the 7th is easier than I remember, though I didn't tee it from the 636-yard tips. The uphill, 615-yard 15th, with a left-to-right sloping fairway, is even harder than I remember. Hot weather meant the fairways weren't shaved down, which took a wee bit of fear away from any left-to-right sidespin imparted, but merely hitting the green in three shots is cause for celebration.

3. Maybe the quintessential shot at Pine Valley is the formidable uphill thrust at the par-4 2nd, where the green sits atop a mountain of sand and turf. With a sufficiently wide fairway and today's equipment, however, the hole doesn't terrify as it used to, at 368 yards from the tips. What still makes me queasy -- for good reason -- is the uphill, 238-yard, par-3 5th. This one-shotter completely holds its own, with a long carry over a lake and a steep fall-off to the right. Gene Littler, then the U.S. Open champion, made 7 here in his 1962 taped-for-TV Shell's Wonderful World of Golf match against Byron Nelson; my caddie told me it was actually closer to a 13, but they went with 7 for television purposes. I tried to squeeze-steer a driver. Predictably, I failed. I did find a sand path short of the green, but gagged on my sand wedge recovery on my way to a double.

2. This was my first overnight at Pine Valley. We did the Short course that afternoon, feasted (in blazer and tie) on Snapper soup at dinner, had an extra beverage and called it a night. (We sipped a Kummel-pronounced "kimmel," -- an odd liqueur favored at British golf clubs, which made sense as we were imbibing with a father-son duo from Sunningdale.) The upstairs clubhouse rooms are modest, but comfortable, with no television set. Just as well. You need monastic-like focus to hone in on the task ahead. I tiptoed next door to the library in the John Arthur Brown Memorial Room (Brown was Pine Valley's long-running, oft-feared president), selected a copy of Hawtree's Colt & Company (British architect H.S. Colt completed the final four holes at Pine Valley upon the death of visionary founder George Crump) and after perusing a few pages, nodded off. What a feeling to wake up, knowing you were to walk downstairs in minutes and bare your soul to the world's No. 1 course.

1. Pine Valley didn't disappoint. I had few scoring highlights, but nary a disaster, either. In the past 20 years, every time I've been asked what I considered to be the best course I've ever played, I unhesitatingly answered "Pine Valley." After a 14-year-absence, though, you wonder. I relish seaside golf, I love a firm and fast links, and I worship at the altar of Cypress Point and the Old Course for favorite places in golf. But the best? Pine Valley. It proved itself again.

By Doaa Farid

Twitter has announced a new service to provide English translations of Arabic tweets to help non-speakers follow political changes in the North African country.

The translation, done by Bing, the online automatic service provider, is attached to verified twitter accounts, and allowed a wider audience to read tweets in Arabic during the protests that started 30 June. Some of these verified accounts include former president Mohamed Morsi, vice-president of foreign affairs Mohamed ElBaradei, and political activist Wael Ghonim.

In a bid to broaden its global user base, Twitter adopted this auto-translation service which is still in an experimental phase. Users can access the translation by clicking on the ?view translation? hypertext, found on the top right corner of the tweet box. The experimental feature began this month.

In a statement, twitter said: ?as part of our experiment with tweet text translation, we?ve enabled translation for some of the most-followed accounts in Egypt, so people around the world can better understand and keep up with what?s happening there.?

Twitter?s translation feature is similar to services offered on Facebook, and search engine Google.

Tropicana Dining Bonanza | Arts & Entertainment | Atlantic City Weekly

Tropicana unveils the most ambitious restaurant expansion this town has seen in a great many years, ?as six separate eateries make their debut on July 11.

On July 11, the Tropicana will celebrate the opening of six new eateries, including Broadway Burger, Chickie's and Pete's, Tony Luke?s, Perry?s Pizza, Marketplace Express Cafe and Casa Taco & Tequila Bar. (Photos by Craig Billow)

The rebooting of Atlantic City?s casino restaurant industry ? now decidedly tilted toward casual upscale fare ? which began with the purchase of the then Trump Marina (now Golden Nugget) by Landry?s Inc. and continued via the recent addition of Resorts? new Jimmy Buffet-themed food enterprises, will officially reach a crescendo on Thursday, July 11.?

On that day, Tropicana Casino & Resort will unveil the most ambitious restaurant expansion this town has seen in a great many years, as six separate eateries make their debut at the same time.?

Never mind that most, if not all of them, have already begun ?de rigeur? or ?soft? openings, designed to work the kinks out in their operations. Starting Thursday at 11am, Tropicana management has planned a series of festivities designed to welcome the newcomers (see sidebar.)?

The grandest of which is easily Chickie?s & Pete?s, spanning across two floors and devouring a whopping 16,000 square feet. Visitors will encounter three separate bars ? one fronting the gaming floor, another called ?Play2? that is nicely tucked away and available for private events, and a third that is a soaring, central construct overlooking the Boardwalk.?

Chickie?s & Pete?s president/CEO Pete Ciarrocchi tells us the new venture is the second-largest in his empire, dwarfed only by the mammoth South Philly location in the heart of the Philadelphia sports complex district built in 1998 (the original Chickie?s & Pete?s was a small Northeast Philly taproom dating back to 1977.?

Making this outlet different and regionally authentic are several products specifically sourced from Jersey shore providers; clams by Brigantine?s Clam Daddy fisheries and local Cape May salt oysters.?

?What we do best is shellfish, and the taste of a hard-shell crab next to the ocean is different than on Frankford Avenue [in Philadelphia,]? says Ciarrocchi. ?

There?s even a proprietary house libation, Crabby Ale, crafted by Downingtown?s well-regarded Victory Brewing Company and whose flavor profile Ciarrocchi describes as ?a high-pitched ale with crab spices.? We counted no fewer than two dozen beers and ales on tap, particularly in the Play2 sports bar.?

The overall Play2 concept looks pretty cool too, as rented ?amusement pod? units enable customers to create their own interactive entertainment, including sports or military gaming and the highly popular ?Dance Revolution,? thereby literally allowing participants to ?become one? with the sport or activity through interactive video. ?

Within The Quarter itself, where Red Square once stood, is Broadway Burger Bar and Grill, owned by the ARK Restaurant organization. Atlantic City earns the distinction of being the company?s second location, after a Las Vegas outlet sited in the New York-New York Hotel-Casino. Burgers are available with an array of more than 15 toppings, and intrepid carnivores must consider challenging the house specialty ?Hub Cap,? reasonably priced at a dollar for every one of its colossal 24 ounces.?

Protecting Excel Worksheets - Business Management Daily

If you?ve ever worked for hours on a workbook one day, then destroyed it with a few poorly planned changes the next, you?ll appreciate these tips on how to protect your work with cell locking, worksheet and workbook protection.

Cell Locking with Worksheet Protection ? If I told you that ever cell in a worksheet was already locked, you?d probably question my grasp on reality. But, indeed, they are. Click the cornerstone of the worksheet to select all cells. On the Home tab, in the Cells group, click the Format drop-down button. You?ll notice that there is an orange box around the Lock Cell selection. What this means is that the locks on the selected cells are ready to be activated. On that same drop-down menu, if you choose Protect Sheet and click OK, the locks are now active and you will not be able to type in any locked cell. Now that you know how it works, click Unprotect Sheet. It?s on the same menu. Turn off the lock attribute on any cells you want to be able to type in, then select Protect Sheet. Now, you won?t be able to delete those technically elegant, 9 ? foot IF statements!

    Microsoft Excel

    ?

Workbook Protection - If you?ve hidden worksheets or your formulas depend upon them being in a particular order, you can also turn on Workbook protection. On the Review tab, in the Changes group, click the Protect Workbook button. You?ll notice the Structure checkbox is already checked. Leave this default and click OK. Now any hidden worksheets will remain hidden, and the structure and order of the worksheets cannot be altered.

Eds Miliband and Balls united by a college date with BBC's Economics Editor Stephanie Flanders

For nearly 20 years they have been colleagues and rivals ? rising up the ranks of the Labour party from humble advisers to become two of the biggest beasts in the political jungle.

But now the Labour leader Ed Miliband has revealed that he and his shadow Chancellor Ed Balls share another, rather more personal, thing in common: they both won the affections of the BBC?s formidable Economics Editor Stephanie Flanders.

In a revealing and at times embarrassingly personal interview for the women?s magazine Now, Mr Miliband said he and Mr Balls both briefly dated Ms Flanders in the 1990s. The pair both studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford, although they only overlapped by a year. Mr Miliband?s relationship with Flanders is understood to have begun shortly afterwards when he was a researcher for the television programme A Week in Politics and Ms Flanders was introduced to him through friends of friends.

Mr Balls ? whose wife, the shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, was Ms Flanders? tutorial partner at Oxford ? then dated Ms Flanders several years later when they worked together at the Financial Times.

Asked by Now whether it was ?weird? to have shared a girlfriend with Mr Balls, the Labour leader said: ?We did both date her but there was a long time apart between me and Ed. Stephanie and I don?t have any problems running into each other now.?

When asked about the relationship Ms Flanders declined to elaborate: ?It was very brief and a very long time ago,? she said.

(AP Photo/Hennes Paynter Communications)

(AP) ? Three women who police say were held captive in a Cleveland home for about a decade have issued a video in which they thanked the public for the encouragement and financial support that are allowing them to restart their lives.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight broke their public silence in the 3-minute, 30-second video posted Monday night on YouTube. They said the support and prayers of family, friends and the public are allowing them to rebuild their lives after what Berry called "this entire ordeal."

The women had gone missing separately between 2002 and 2004, when they were 14, 16, and 20 years old.

In the video, none of the women had any visible scars of the abuse they said they suffered at the hands of Ariel Castro, who has pleaded not guilty to a 329-count indictment alleging he kidnapped them off the streets and held them captive in his two-story home. They were smiling and appeared upbeat.

Castro, a 52-year-old former bus driver, fathered a 6-year-old daughter with Berry and is accused of starving and punching Knight, causing her to miscarry. He was arrested May 6, shortly after Berry broke through a door at the home and yelled to neighbors for help.

Berry, the only one of the three women whose photographs have appeared publicly since her release, had shorter hair with a blonde streak in it. Knight, who authorities said had been taken captive first, wore glasses, had closely cropped hair and spoke a bit haltingly.

Knight said in the video that she is building a "brand new life."

"I may have been through hell and back, but I am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face and my head held high," she said, reading from a prepared statement. "I will not let the situation define who I am. I will define the situation. I don't want to be consumed by hatred."

DeJesus' parents, Felix DeJesus and Nancy Ruiz, thanked the public for donations to a fund set up to help the women. In addition, Ruiz encouraged parents with missing loved ones to reach out for assistance. "Count on your neighbors," she said. "Don't be afraid to ask for the help because help is available."

Kathy Joseph, Knight's attorney, said in a statement that the three women wanted to "say thank you to people from Cleveland and across the world, now that two months have passed."

She said they're being recognized in public, "so they decided to put voices and faces to their heartfelt messages."

James Wooley, an attorney for Berry and DeJesus, also issued a statement saying Knight and his clients thank people for the privacy they've been given and do not want to discuss their case with the news media or anyone else.

The video was filmed July 2 and released by a public relations agency on the women's behalf with the cooperation of their lawyers.

Dropbox Says It Has No Plans To Charge Developers (Or Otherwise Change Its Business Model)

drew houston dbxOne of the questions that came up a couple of times during the press Q&A at Dropbox's DBX developer conference: What does today's news mean for the company's business model? Given the impressive user numbers and platform expansion announced today (including a new API to sync data between apps), could Dropbox try to make money from advertising? Or by charging developers? Co-founder and CEO Drew Houston told reporters that's not the plan. Instead, he wants to stick with the company's existing business model, which involves charging subscription fees for pro and business users. In fact, he said that the simplicity of how Dropbox makes money is part of its appeal, because it means there should be fewer surprises down the road.

UK deports radical cleric Abu Qatada to Jordan

LONDON (AP) ? Radical Muslim preacher Abu Qatada was deported early Sunday from the U.K. to Jordan to face terror charges, ending a more than decade-long battle to remove a man described as a key al-Qaida operative in Europe.

The move comes after Britain and Jordan ratified a treaty on torture aimed at easing human rights concerns that had blocked previous attempts to deport the Palestinian-born Jordanian preacher.

British Home Secretary Theresa May announced Abu Qatada's departure in a statement early Sunday, expressing confidence the U.K. public would welcome the conclusion of efforts dating back to 2001 to remove the radical cleric.

"This dangerous man has now been removed from our shores to face the courts in his own country," May said in a statement. The Home Office then posted a picture on Twitter of Abu Qatada, wearing a long robe and climbing the steps of a plane ? proof that the long extradition saga was over.

Abu Qatada was wanted in Jordan for retrial in several terror cases in which he was sentenced in absentia. Britain had tried since 2001 to deport Abu Qatada ? whose real name is Omar Mahmoud Mohammed Othman ? but courts have blocked extradition over concerns that evidence obtained under torture could be used against him.

After years of successfully fighting the numerous attempts to expel him from the U.K., the 53-year-old preacher recently indicated he would voluntarily return to Jordan if that country and Britain ratified a treaty on torture.

That treaty ? which explicitly bans the use of evidence "where there are serious and credible allegations that a statement from a person has been obtained by torture or ill-treatment" ? was ratified by Britain and Jordan last month.

It paved the way for the long-awaited removal of the man described in courts in Britain and Spain as a senior al-Qaida figure in Europe who had close ties to the late Osama bin Laden.

Abu Qatada is accused by Britain of links with Zacarias Moussaoui, the only person charged in the United States over the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and with shoe bomber Richard Reid. Audio recordings of some of the cleric's sermons were found in an apartment in Hamburg, Germany, used by some of the Sept. 11 hijackers.

Authorities first tried to deport Abu Qatada in 2001, then detained him in 2002 under anti-terrorism laws, which at the time allowed suspected terrorists to be jailed without charge.

Though he was released in 2005 when the unpopular law was overturned, the cleric was kept under close surveillance and detained in various ways. He most recently was being held at London's Belmarsh prison after breaching a bail condition in March which restricted the use of mobile phones and communication devices.

The British home secretary acknowledged the delays in the legal process in her statement announcing that "at last" Abu Qatada had been deported, saying it is "clear that we need to make sense of our human rights laws and remove the many layers of appeals available to foreign nationals we want to deport."

    Baseball tourney gets Merrimack involved

For 11-year-old sluggers across the state, the big news this week isn't the heat, it's the Peter J. Skeffington Memorial Cal Ripkin Baseball Tournament playing out in Merrimack.

Nine teams in the western division are battling it out for top slots and a chance to face the winners in the eastern division in a state championship tournament later this month.

"This is one of the best tournaments," said Bob Shagoury, Umpire in Chief for Merrimack Youth Baseball. He said umpires volunteer time, parents man the concession stand and local businesses donate to support Merrimack Youth baseball and the tournament which raises money for Skeffington scholarships for Merrimack High graduates.

"It's double elimination, and the winners go to the state tournament," said Merrimack resident Ed Orleans, assistant state commissioner for Cal Ripkin baseball. "That's the pecking order and the coaches do their best to get them there."

Orleans said the post-season tournament was started back in the '90s to honor Peter Skeffington, a former baseball and Pop Warner football coach who died of cancer at age 42.

"He gave a lot of himself to the town," said Orleans, who added that his son played for Skeffington. "He died much too young."

More than 650 Merrimack kids play youth baseball, and that's down from about 1,000 in years past.

Merrimack mom Claire Lajewski was sitting on the hillside at Harry Bise Field Saturday afternoon cheering on her son, Zach Doyon, and his teammates.

"Last night was really hot," said Lajewski who, like the rest of the crowd, was grateful for a slight, but noticeable dip in the temperature.

Lajewski said, win or lose, the tournament gives players a sense of pride.

"It's an accomplishment," she said adding that the kids learn to cooperate with one another.

Elizabeth Seaver worked the concession stand Friday night and said, after a couple of hours serving up hot dogs, hamburgers and baskets of fries, she went home and jumped in her pool with her clothes still on.

But like other parent volunteers, Seaver, whose son Tyler was in the lineup, is a big fan of Merrimack Youth Baseball .

"I'd rather have my kids on the field than on the streets," she said.

Teams from Nashua, Hollis/Brookline, ConVal, Swanzey, Kersarge Mt., Milford, Merrimack and Keene are playing in this year's tournament. Keene (as host) and the top three teams with compete in the state tournament beginning July 20 in Keene.

"A lot of people volunteer a lot of time for this," said Orleans. "It's great for the kids and the towns."
