The Golden Eagles scored twice in the second half to pull away from the Tigers and advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2010!
Marquette found themselves in an unusual spot last night. After an 11th minute goal by Princeton's Lauren Lazo, the Golden Eagles were trailing in the first half of a match for the first time since September. For a while, it looked like things would require some halftime adjustments to figure out a way to get level. But as the 45th minute started ticking away, Cara Jacobson found Mady Vicker on the right side of the net and Vicker was able to get it past a diving Claire Pinciaro into the left corner of the net for the equalizer.
Marquette used two second half set pieces to take the lead and tack on some insurance as well. In the 53rd minute, Taylor Madigan hammered home the eventual game winner off of a Maegan Kelly corner kick, and Ally Miller got into the action as well when she found some space for a shot past Pinciaro off of a Jacobson corner kick in the 83rd minute.
Keeper Amanda Engel made one first half save to earn her 14th win of her collegiate career and move to 14-0-1 overall.
Marquette advances to the Sweet 16 and will face regional #1 seed BYU, who beat Auburn yesterday 1-0 on a penalty kick by Carlee Payne Holmoe. The MU-BYU match will be at 6pm Central time.
