iTunes 11 now available to download: fresh design, more iCloud features

iTunes 11 screen cap

Apple's thoroughly re-engineered iTunes is now ready for you to try. The desktop download includes a new MiniPlayer for playing tracks in a widget-sized window, an "Up Next" feature for cueing up songs and viewing what's next at a glance, and -- if you can't decide which tune to rack up -- Apple's software will now offer "instant recommendations" of its own. iTunes 11 will also endeavor to relocate your position within a song, movie or TV shows if your media consumption ever gets interrupted. Finally, iCloud integration will allow you to play back your library on any device, while an offline option should allow in-flight or underground listening sessions to continue without a hitch.

All societies to get deemed conveyance by June ... - Real Estate India

??|?? November 29, 2012 ?? 08:52am ??|Contributed by manoja

To speed up the allotment of deemed conveyance to housing societies before June 2013, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has decided to set up a coordination committee under the Collector.

He has directed that a website be created with information pertaining to all the 88,000 housing societies in the state and their deemed conveyance status. The Coordination Committee will meet every month to ensure a time-bound implementation of the proposal.

A conveyance deed is a document executed to transfer the title of land and building in favour of a society.

The decision for the time-bound implementation was taken during a review meeting conducted by the CM on the implementation of deemed conveyance in Maharashtra. The CM stated that granting of deemed conveyance involves various departments like Housing, Cooperative and Revenue, and the entire process should be coordinated by the Housing department. He directed that more people should be recruited to ensure the process of handing over deemed conveyance is expedited.

Under the law, a builder is required to convey the land and building within four months of formation to the society. However, many builders do not do so. As a result, people who have brought flats do not have ownership of land. To tide over this problem, the government amended the Maharashtra Ownership Flats Act, 1963 (MOFA) and provided for deemed conveyance in favour of legal bodies.

Under this provision, after the expiry of four months of formation of the legal body, the land and building is deemed to have been conveyed to the legal body. To ensure this in the government records, an authority has been designated to hear these cases and execute the conveyance deed in favour of the society.

Great 21st Century Scams: Search Engine Optimization | Devenia ...

That?s right ? you read it here first!? Search engine optimization is a scam.

Just kidding!? SEO is actually one of the key components to the success of your company in the present and future.? How key is it?

If you don?t do it, your business will fail.? It?s not a matter of if, but when.

But, the good news is that you have time.? Although it?s very beneficial to have right now, it?s not yet essential.? Why will SEO eventually be essential?? I?ll show you in a few simple steps:

  • Around 80% of consumers first learn about businesses, products, and services they need from the internet first
  • Many other companies, and soon most, are doing it, and are climbing to the top of the search engines
  • Google returns the best search results, and currently controls about 90% of the global search market

For those reasons, SEO is essential to perform.? And, if you get in on the game now, you will be ahead of much of the competition.? If you wait, you are either going to lose out on profits while you try to figure out how to catch up, or you are going to have to spend much more money than you wanted to regain your competitiveness.

The Future of SEO

The largest SEO company currently is valued at around $100 million, making it, in the grand scheme of things, a fairly small company.? But, eventually, and I can?t promise when, every business will have either an in-house SEO team, or they will hire someone else to do the work.? These educated guesses are based on the information I presented above.

Get in Now ? SEO?s Cost Will Only Increase?

The cost of search engine optimization can only go up from where it is now.? On a cost-per-lead basis, it?s actually much cheaper than any other form of advertising, but that doesn?t mean it doesn?t have an associated expense.

Why will SEO only cost more??

Because, as I noted earlier, more and more businesses are going to keep discovering its value and continue trying to grow.? As a result, there will be more competition for the same keywords.? Of course, more revenue-increasing keywords will continue to be added, but there will be more competitive terms that are the mainstays of each respective industry.

In addition to that commonsense argument, Google is constantly changing its algorithm.? Its goal is to rank the highest quality, most relevant, and timely content near the top of the search engines.? How it goes about that decision is much more complicated and takes more work than it did five years ago, and you can bet that process will only increase in complexity.

After all, if Google gets lazy, it will go the way of other search engines that used to be big players ? Excite, Hotbot, Web Crawler, and Yahoo!? You probably don?t even remember the names of most of these, but you definitely know Yahoo ? and that search engine is basically irrelevant in the modern age.

Thanks for reading this article, and keep in mind to dedicate yourself to SEO as soon as possible!

Five famous words in WWE history

While the motives of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose remain shrouded in mystery, the WWE Universe can at least be clear on what to call the NXT competitors: ?The Shield.? That?s the moniker the trio of troublemakers adopted in an interview with Michael Cole recently on Raw.

So what does describing themselves as ?The Shield? mean, exactly? Ambrose led viewers to believe it represents his cohorts? attempt to protect WWE from injustice. (WATCH) The new label will ultimately be defined, though, by the WWE Universe through the insurgents? actions in the weeks to come.

Certain everyday terms can take on a different definition when they?re uttered in close proximity to the squared circle. From the name of The Grandest Stage of Them All to an infamous taunt by ?Stone Cold? Steve Austin, take a look at how five key words took on a whole new meaning in WWE.

Radioactive Fish in Japan

Fish caught in the waters around the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan could be too radioactive to eat for a decade, as samples show that radioactivity levels in that part of the ocean remain elevated and show little sign of coming down.

Cod, flounder, halibut, pollock, skate and sole could be off limits for years, since large and bottom-dwelling species carry most risk. Sample fish caught in waters near the melted reactors show that there is still a source of caesium leaking into the ocean, either on the seafloor or still being discharged into the sea, perhaps from what is left of the cooling waters.

In the Guardian, Fiona Harvey quotes Woods Hole researcher Ken Buesseler as saying, "These fish could have to be banned for a long time. The most surprising thing for me was that the levels [of radioactivity] in the fish were not going down. There should have been much lower numbers." This is especially tough for an island nation like Japan, which relies on fish for a major part of its diet.

As of April 2012, fish can only be sold in Japan if it contains less than 100 becquerels of caesium 134 and 137 per kilogram of wet weight, down from a previous limit of 500 becquerels.

Harvey quotes Buessler as saying, "This is not lethal--I'm not trying to be alarmist, but the levels [of radioactivity in the fish] are measurable and consistent. It's a small increase in risk."

Richard's Real Estate and Urban Economics Blog: What is Apple's ...

Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs is a lot of fun--at least in part because it is not a hagiography.

One of the most striking things about the book is that Jobs never pushed profit maximization per se--he pushed "great products." ?When John Scully pushed out Jobs and ran the company, he did push profit maximization--and Apple nearly went out of business. ?Re-enter Jobs with his products-first philosophy, and Apple eventually becomes the most valuable company in history.

When economists model firms, we inevitably assume profit maximization, and then allow firms to compete either through price or quality. ?The exception to this is a principal-agent set-up, where managers are seeking to maximize their own compensation. ?But this doesn't really work for Apple, where Jobs was both a principal and an agent.

Maybe none of this matters--that making great products is a sufficiently strong proxy for profit maximization. ?But Job's desire to make great products led him to care a lot less about cost minimization than, say, Dell--the chapter on how fanatical Jobs was about the plastic case molding for the original Macintosh underscores how Jobs tended not to think about marginal revenue and marginal cost when making decisions.

PFT: Packers quiet after 38-10 beatdown by Giants

Green Bay Packers quarterback Rodgers reacts against the New York Giants during the third quarter of their NFL football game in East RutherfordReuters

The last time the Giants manhandled the Packers, outside linebacker Clay Matthews made it worse by saying the Packers beat themselves in the playoff meeting.

After last night?s demolition, there was no doubt about who did what to whom.

But the Packers took their 38-10 beating and chose to file it away as one of 16, not attaching any global significance to it.

?It?s one game,? Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said, via Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. ?Had a good opportunity to put ourselves in a better position than we?re in right now and didn?t do that. We?re going to be disappointed watching this film. [But] we have to move on. We?ve got to get a couple things shored up. When you win five in a row, everybody?s happy but, like I said last year during the [undefeated] run, there?s things that kind of go under the radar that need to be handled. Sometimes it takes a loss to handle those things.

?Now, that being said, I?ve never been on the side of this kind of loss before. But I know if you play long enough that at a certain point you will. Hopefully, we?ll remember this feeling and not let this kind of embarrassment to happen again. We?re better than this. We?re going to regroup.?

The Packers have shown at different points that they can be better than this, but until they show it against the Giants, the questions with linger.

New York?s strength is its pass-rush, and as presently constructed, the Packers can?t slow that down. And if Rodgers is on his back, he can?t pass.

Rodgers threw for 219 yards, with 61 of them coming on a first-quarter touchdown to Jordy Nelson. After that, Rodgers absorbed five sacks, and was seemingly chased out of the pocket on half his snaps.

?We were thoroughly beaten this evening. Congratulations to the New York Giants,? coach Mike McCarthy said. ?We were beaten in every facet, really starting with myself. I feel when your team performs that way, it starts with the head coach. . . .

?I think this is a game that really makes everybody look inside and find out what you?re about. I believe in what we?re about as a football team. I haven?t felt like this probably since the first game I coached as a Green Bay Packer head coach. We were beaten very thoroughly tonight. It doesn?t taste good. It doesn?t feel good.?

It was the biggest margin of defeat since a 35-7 loss to the Bears on Dec. 23, 2007, and the worst loss during the Rodgers era, surpassing a 51-29 loss to the Saints on Nov. 24, 2008.

So no amount of defecting was going to change that stark reality.

Toys R Us, for instance, seems a solidly blue store. Self-identified employees of the store gave $39,000 to political candidates in the 2012 election cycle, and $36,000 of that went to Democrats.

Dig into the numbers though, and you?ll see that Toys R Us is not so much Democratic as Klobucharian. All that $36,000 went to one candidate, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D) of Minnesota. (That?s kind of odd, isn?t it? The retailer?s corporate headquarters are in New Jersey.) Other than that, Mitt Romney got $1,750 from Toys R Us workers. President Obama got zilch, according to CRP?s Open Secrets blog.

Macy?s employees, on the other hand, were big Obama fans. They donated $28,870 to the president?s reelection campaign, as opposed to $16,390 to GOP nominee Mr. Romney. This Democratic lean was counterbalanced to a certain extent by the store?s corporate political action committee, however. (Toys R Us doesn?t appear to have a central PAC.) Macy?s PAC gave $12,000 to Republicans, and $4,000 to Democrats.

Best Buy seems more of a red retailer. Both it s employees and the company?s PAC had a slight preference for Republicans, according to CRP. Store employees gave $17,662 to Democrats and $22,419 to the GOP, for instance.

It would take (2) lifetimes to experience everything Alaska has to offer. With its vast wilderness, Alaska provides opportunities for viewing wildlife either up close or from far away, in its natural habitat. For example, Alaska holds the distinction of having the largest Eagle population in the world. Whether you are a nature lover or not, just seeeing these magnificent birds soar throught the air is enough to take your breath away. With a wilderness area that is 2 1/2 times the size of the state of Texas, you can be guaranteed excellent photo opportunities.
It?s hard to believe that Alaska has the largest temperate rain forest in the United States. Take the time to walk in it and discover this incredible gift. Indescribable adventures await you whereever your journey takes you in Alaska. Every ?ice-blue? glacier and historic waterfront town calls for you to jump in to explore and discover its uniqueness and beauty. Give yourself the freedom to answer this ?call of the wild?. In every city from Anchorage to Fairbanks and beyond, there?s plenty to do and see.
One of the ways to see this beautiful state is to cruise the Inner Passage. Taking one of the cruise ships is a simple way to get your feet wet and explore the state. You have the security of knowing that your basic needs like food, transportation, and your lodging is handled while you have the freedom of choosing any number of activities.
Depending on the town you stop in, you can choose to go whale watching, or take a helicopter trip and walk on a glacier. You can ride the White Pass Railroad or pan for gold. You can even take a Jeep tour on a logging trail and top it off with a salmon bake. Also, every town appears to have their own special and historical events happening on a regular basis and you definitely want to catch these, as well. There are also many fascinating museums and remember to save time to see the stunning Aurora Borealis, especially if you go in the fall.
Alaska seems to have it all. From world famous Parks & Preserves to Volcanos. From Historical & Annual Events and everything in between. With such variety, it?s surprising that anyone would look anywhere but north when vacation time comes. Alaska is a great American Vacation destination that you will want to experience for yourself at least once in your lifetime.

Actew calls for reforms to evenly match work safety to cost and ...

ActewAGL chief executive Michael Costello would prefer a disgruntled customer than a dead worker and Canberra?s construction industry risking safety due to unrealistic deadlines and cost-cutting.

According to a Canberra Times report, ActewAGL and ACTEW Corporation called for reforms to tender processes including ?weight given to a contractor?s workplace health and safety record, equal to that of the cost and schedule.?

Mr Costello said tender process needed to reward businesses that prioritise workplace safety and not penalise them. He said he was obsessed with reducing safety risks to his 900-strong workforce, 350 of them working in the field.

Mr Costello believed it was timely for the government to call an inquiry not only because of workplace fatalities which happened recently but because safety culture need to continuously evolve to avoid complacency.

?Safety is not a static thing. It is not a case of ?I?ve done it, I?ve got a safe workplace?,? said Mr Costello.

?You?re dealing with humans and one of the biggest problems we have is you get complacent, you get bored, you cut corners.?

Since his appointment as chief executive in 2008, Mr Costello has initiated a ?root and branch? review of safety systems. He also hired a specialist director of environment, health, safety and quality.

Mr Costello said that he was very much aware of the innate dangers of a workplace in electricity and gas supply, ?which is both dangerous to the workers and to the community?.

The Canberra Times further reported that one of the incidents which sparked the government?s inquiry was the death of a 43-year-old truck driver when he was electrocuted in March after electricity arced from powerlines to his vehicle while delivering gravel. Mr Costello said the accident disappointed the company, which has exerted efforts to warn the public on the possible dangers of working near powerlines.

According to Mr Costello, ActewAGL is coming up with new strategies to promote safety improvements including paying cash incentives to workers who will report ?near misses? so they could be examined. He also personally meets with injured workers to discuss ways to manage risks.

Mr Costello said that improved safety would mean better business.

?People seem to think spending money on safety is a cost, but if you run a safe business you make more money and are more productive than if you don?t,? he said.

?The very procedures and processes and organisation which makes for a safe workplace are the very procedures which make for an efficient organisation.?

Cheap? Suh's cleat hits Schaub below the belt

By LARRY LAGE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:30 p.m. ET Nov. 22, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - The left cleat of Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh connected with Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub in his groin area in their Thanksgiving game.

It wasn't clear on replays Thursday whether it was intentional.

"I really don't have anything to say about that play or that person," Schaub said.

Suh was on his chest, taken down by an offensive lineman, when he extended his left foot below Schaub's belt. Suh didn't talk to reporters after the game.

Last year on Thanksgiving, Suh was ejected for stomping on the right arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith and was suspended for two games.

Suh has been fined in previous seasons for roughing up quarterbacks: Cincinnati's Andy Dalton, Chicago's Jay Cutler and Cleveland's Jake Delhomme.

Will Volkswagen Have Dogs In Its Super Bowl Spot? - Business Insider

Deutsch LA created what is probably the most memorable spot in recent Super Bowl history, and it came in the?form of a little boy in a Darth Vader suit.

After agonizing over how the shop could possibly follow the viral sensation (55 million YouTube views and counting), Deutsch LA decided to turn from children to the next most-loved Super Bowl star: Dogs.

VW came out with an incredible teaser of costumed dogs barking the tune of the Imperial March, which was followed by the 2011 spot of a comically obese golden retriever who just wants to lose weight to fit through his doggy door and run alongside a car.

The dog-theme worked so well that Deutsch LA continued the trend and recently released a popular ad in which a bulldog eats his owners car keys and has to be held against the door to open the vehicle.

Moral of the story: People love dogs. So when I was in the ultra-modern halls of Deutsch LA, I asked the creatives in charge of the 2013 Super Bowl spot if they'd be making an appearance in the next ad.

"It was on the brief," group creative director and VW genius Michael Kadin said, "NO DOGS."

"But I don't know if the whole animal kingdom is off," creative partner and fellow EVP/GCD Matt Ian joked.

However, Deutsch LA CEO Mike Sheldon was more resolute.

"No, there will decidedly be no animals in our Volkswagen advertising," Sheldon told BI.

"We just want to do something that is spectacular," he continued, "that people talk about, that people share, that makes people say, 'Oh my gosh, I just have to be a part of that Volkswagen religion.'"

Volkswagen has become known for its great Super Bowl spots, so the pressure is always mounting to come up with better-than-before creative.

But Sheldon is confident in Deutsch LA's still to-be-determined Super Bowl 2013 output.

"The 110 million people watching the Super Bowl aren't sitting around wondering are you going to beat the Darth ad," Sheldon said. "We are, clients are, you [the media] are, but the other 109.999 million aren't. So you just have to do something great that gets the point of the brand across."

He continued, "We have a great brand combined with clients who have a big appetite for great work, which is 80 percent of the battle."

When asked about whether Deutsch LA was thinking of putting celebrities in the spot, Sheldon raised his eyebrows.

"Everything is fair game, but it would never be a celebrity for celebrity's sake," he said. "Volkswagen's too down to earth and charming, too much of a nice story teller brand for that."

Although, with the right idea, maybe.

"Everything is on the table."

Except for puppies.

The Mac Utility Bundle Gets You Parallels 8 at $20 Off (Plus Four Other Apps)Software bundles are a great way to pick up some handy new apps at a huge discount, but the Mac Utility Bundle from StackSocial is particularly attractive if you just want Parallels 8. The bundle itself is $60, which is already $20 less than the retail price for our favorite virtualization software for Mac.

The bundle doesn't just include Parallels, of course. You also get four other Mac apps as well: SnagIt, VirusBarrier, MacOptimizer, and Rubbernet. We're not familiar with any of these apps, but they offer a nice bonus if you need them. Either way, $20 off of Parallels 8 is a solid 25% discount. If that's not enough, you can still get the previous version of Parallels for $50 over at Newegg. Or if you just want Parallels 8 for $20 off, it turns out you can get it all by itself directly from Parallels.

Maine WVII News Anchors Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio ...

Two Maine news anchors resigned together at the end of Tuesday?s broadcast after ?a longstanding battle with upper management over journalistic practices? including being expected to do politically unbalanced news, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio announced at the end of WVII-TV?s 6 p.m. newscast that it would be their final broadcast together.

?And finally tonight, this will be Tony and my final show together here on ABC 7,? Michaels said. ?The last six years have been an interesting and enjoyable time for both of us as we have been the longest running news team in Bangor.?

Consiglio said ?some recent developments have come to our attention though and departing together is the best alternative we can take.?

The Daily News reported both anchors were frustrated with the way they were told to do their jobs.

?I just wanted to know that I was doing the best job I could and was being honest and ethical as a journalist, and I thought there were times when I wasn?t able to do that,? Consiglio said.

Michaels, also the station?s news director, cited a ?constant disrespecting and belittling of staff? and ?a lack of knowledge from ownership and upper management in running a newsroom to the extent that I was not allowed to structure and direct them professionally.?

She also said they were ?expected to do somewhat unbalanced news, politically.? Neither one said which political leaning that was.

Mike Palmer, WVII/WFVX vice president and general manager, told the newspaper he wasn?t entirely surprised by the resignations, calling it ?unfortunate, but not unexpected.? Still, he disputed the characterizations of management?s role in the newsroom.

?Upper management is not involved in the daily production of the news. Period,? he said.

Neither reporter told anyone prior to the broadcast they were planning to resign.

?We figured if we had tendered our resignations off the air, we would not have been allowed to say goodbye to the community on the air and that was really important for us to do that,? Michaels said.

Pintofeed: This gadget looks after your pets so you don't have to ...

pintofeed-features-feeding-1.jpeg

As much as you may love your little cat or puppy or hamster-y thing it can be a real pain in the ass to remember to feed them. But unfortunately, like most living things, they need those overpriced bone-shaped treats regularly. So that's why the Pintofeed is pretty revolutionary when it comes to household gadgets, because it's a wi-fi connected pet feeding device that'll allow you to use your phone and not your limbs to feed your pets.

You can fill the Pintofeed with up to 10lbs of food and then press the button to release half-cup servings whenever you please. If you're using the gadget when you go away there are all kinds of safeguards to ensure it doesn't let you down, like battery backup, different motors and an alert system if something goes horribly wrong.

But it gets even better, because it doesn't even rely on you remembering that your animals need to be fed, you can get notifications about feeding times, the size of portion your pet will need and all kinds of other updates via email, text, Twitter and Facebook. Wow, it's like you can buy a living thing and then put absolutely no effort into keeping it alive and kicking yourself, isn't it?

We can see how the Pintofeed would be incredibly handy if you're going away for a day or two and don't have anyone to look after Twinkle or Rover. However, we don't want some lazy losers to be relying on it to feed their pets day in and day out, which we fear will definitely be the case. There's also a problem for those (crazy) cat people with tonnes of animals, if one's a little bit greedy and podgy it's totally going to bully the others ones :(:(:(.

The Pintofeed gadget is currently raising funds over on Indiegogo in the US.

4 Questions to Ask When Reviewing Potential Employee Social ...

Heather Huhman November 20, 2012

EmployeeSocialMediaPages

For any startup or small business, hiring top quality candidates is always a challenge. You want to ensure you?re getting the most dedicated, talented workers around, but it can often be difficult to tell this just from a resume, cover letter, and interview.

Tech startups that want to ensure they?re getting the most qualified candidates ? candidates who mesh well with their company culture ? need look no further than the Web for added insight. Public social media profiles can be an excellent indication of whether or not a candidate would be a good fit for your company, offering added insight into a candidate that a resume and cover letter often can?t parallel.

But before you Google your candidates or start browsing their blog or Twitter account, you have to know what you?re looking for. Here are four questions to ask when reviewing potential employee social media profiles:

1. Do they demonstrate passion? If a candidate uses social media as a tool for professional credibility and advancement, they will regularly display their knowledge and passion about their chosen industry. If the candidate regularly shares links and offers insight into industry news and happenings, this is a good indication they have a vested interest in their work. Determine what kinds of information your candidate is sharing, and how this relates to their dedication to their career as a whole.

2. Do they maintain professionalism? Look for any signs that a candidate may not mesh well with your company culture ? are their tweets and blog posts laden with profanity? Do their online posts or pictures border on vulgar or unprofessional? An ideal candidate shows their personality online while also maintaining a level of professionalism. Of course, this doesn?t mean the candidate shouldn?t display their creativity and wide range of personal interests as well ? you want to hire a colleague, not a robot!

3. Do they provide background info? Check your candidate?s presence on sites like LinkedIn to view their work history, and determine if they include any work history in their Twitter bio, personal blog, or other public profiles. A good candidate will provide some background info that allows you to see where their past experience lies. Sites like LinkedIn also allow you to see if the candidate has any existing recommendations from past employers or colleagues, which can be a good indication of how well they maintain professional relationships.

4. How well do they communicate? Don?t skimp on checking for proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling ? good communication skills are ideal no matter what your industry or expertise. A qualified candidate realizes it?s important to display these skills to show they?re a competent and engaged worker. Public online profiles are the number one way for job seekers to display their unique skills?and nothing kills credibility like a lack of attention to good communication.

Checking the public online profiles of potential employees can be an excellent way to gauge what they?re all about, including their passions, interests, professionalism, and communication skills. Next time you Google a candidate, keep these four questions in mind before extending an interview or job offer. Good luck!

Do you check potential employee?s social media profiles? If so, how does this help you to gauge whether they?d be a good fit at your company or startup?

Legal Clarity, Please. - Cunning Hired Knaves

Let?s assume, for the sake of argument, that the malignant fairytale is true, and that there is something living and active called ?the people of Ireland?, and that ?the people of Ireland? can enshrine a conceptual dissection of women?s bodies in law, such that the woman and the foetus she carries inside her are two separate individuals, whose dignity and freedom are to be assured, with equal right to life.

Let?s also assume that this people of Ireland have a legitimate authority to do this. Let?s assume that its legitimacy derives from the fact that the people of Ireland have freely adopted, enacted, and given their constitution to themselves, and that as such, in the final instance, they can legitimately call on a band of armed men to enforce the observance of the aforementioned conceptual dissection, and that all the citizens of Ireland consent to this.Look at the comments of Bishop John Fleming published in the Irish Times, immediately before Savita?s story reached the world. He justified the prohibition on abortion by saying that ?for Christians, our bodies are not our own to do with them what we will.? In a way, this is true: our bodies are not items of property that we can exchange for other items of property, even if most of us are compelled to sell our labour power in order to live. Nonetheless, the unspoken corollary to John Fleming's position, with regard to law in Ireland, is that our bodies belong to the State to do with them what it will. This, as Ireland?s prohibitions on abortion, and the ensuing public debate in the aftermath of Savita Halappanavar's death show, is the consensus position. For example, look at Fergus Finlay?s comments published in the Irish Examiner today. He says: ?We live in a country where the people have decided, very clearly and very explicitly, that we fundamentally value the lives of unborn babies. The people have also decided, equally clearly and explicitly, that we do not want under any circumstances to prevent any woman who wishes to terminate her pregnancy abroad from doing so. And the people have decided, again clearly and explicitly, that no woman whose life is in danger ? for whatever reason ? should be denied a termination here at home. That?s a clear and unequivocal position. And it?s the position of the Irish people, as expressed time and again in the ballot box.?That is, the ?people of Ireland? can call on the institutions of the State to enforce a prohibition on abortion as it sees fit, and this is regardless of the views of the woman who is pregnant. It is only if the woman is at risk of death that an abortion might be allowed, but this has nothing to do with what the woman thinks: it is a matter for an expert or group of experts with sufficient legal and medical qualifications, appointed by the State, to adjudicate.Well, let?s say you believe the malignant fairytale, as Fergus Finlay and so many other people do, about the legitimate sovereign authority of the people of Ireland to make and enforce such laws. And let's say you believe that a woman who is an Irish citizen freely denies herself the right to an abortion because that is what she has decided alongside the rest of the Irish people. But even if you do believe all this, Savita Halappanavar, as far as I can gather, was not an Irish citizen. Therefore, what legitimate authority would the people of Ireland have to impose their laws on a person who was not even a citizen of their State, a person who therefore has had no role in the drafting, free adoption, enacting or giving of the constitution to herself? Savita was a person who, by virtue of her status, would not have been able to vote in any future referendum on abortion laws. Had she been able to give birth to a child in Ireland, would her child have been an Irish citizen? Perhaps, perhaps not, and certainly not automatically. But there are many other women of a similar status whose children would definitely not have been granted the status of Irish citizen, and after compelling them to give birth, the State ?acting on behalf of the people of Ireland- can expel them and their children beyond the borders of the State, or, it can confine them to degrading living conditions as it wills. What legitimate authority, then, ?assuming the malignant fairytale is true- did the Irish State have to execute its designs on Savita?s body, or, for that matter, on the body of any woman who is not a citizen of Ireland, and to say that their will counts for nothing??This is a Catholic country? is the phrase that has reverberated around the world in the aftermath of Savita Halappanavar?s death at the hands of the Irish State: it was the rationalisation provided to her and her family for the refusal to accede to her request for an abortion. However, if we see this primarily in terms of religious belief, we lose sight of the question of legitimate State authority, and we disregard the consequences of our belief in malignant fairytales. Not only with regard to abortion, but with regard to the way in which our society is organised, and the designs that are imposed on us, with frequently catastrophic consequences for those people who do not attain the status of citizen, as well for as many other people, especially women, who do.

Discovery could hold the key to super-sensory hearing

Monday, November 19, 2012

The discovery of a previously unidentified hearing organ in the South American bushcrickets' ear could pave the way for technological advancements in bio-inspired acoustic sensors research, including medical imaging and hearing aid development.

Researchers from the University of Bristol and University of Lincoln discovered the missing piece of the jigsaw in the understanding of the process of energy transformation in the 'unconventional' ears of the bushcrickets (or katydids).

Bushcrickets have four tympana (or ear drums) ? two on each foreleg; but until now it has been unknown how the various organs connect in order for the insect to hear. As the tympana (a membrane which vibrates in reaction to sound) does not directly connect with the mechanoreceptors (sensory receptors), it was a mystery how sound was transmitted from air to the mechano-sensory cells.

Sponsored by the Human Frontiers Science Program (HFSP), the research was developed in the lab of Professor Daniel Robert, a Royal Society Fellow at the University of Bristol. Dr Fernando Montealegre-Z, who is now at the University of Lincoln's School of Life Sciences, discovered a newly identified organ while carrying out research into how the bushcricket tubing system in the ear transports sound. The research focussed on the bushcricket Copiphora gorgonensis, a neotropical species from the National Park Gorgona in Colombia, an island in the Pacific. Results suggest that the bushcricket ear operates in a manner analogous to that of mammals. A paper detailing this remarkable new breakthrough is published today in the journal, Science.

Dr Montealegre-Z said: "We discovered a novel structure that constitutes the key element in hearing in these insects, which had not been considered in previous work. The organ is a fluid-filled vesicle, which we have named the 'Auditory Vesicle'. This hearing organ mediates the process of conversion of acoustic energy (sound waves) to mechanical, hydraulic and electrochemical energy. The integration laser Doppler vibrometry and micro-CT scanning allowed us to identify the auditory vesicle and to conclude that the process relies on a tympanal lever system analogous to the mammalian ossicles. This serves to transmit air-borne vibrations to the fluid (the auditory vesicle), and also on the mechanoreceptors. Therefore the bushcricket ear performs the crucial stage of air to liquid impedance conversion and amplification just as in a mammal's ear."

In mammals, hearing relies on three canonical processing stages: an eardrum collecting sound, a middle ear impedance converter and a cochlear frequency analyser. The katydid ear performs these steps in the hearing process, something previously unknown in insects. The discovery of the impedance conversion and amplification mechanisms is a huge step forward in understanding the mechanisms of hearing processes in insects. This level of sophistication, sensitivity and functionality of insect hearing could be transferred into engineered bio-inspired systems. For instance, the ears of some bushcricket species are remarkably sensitive and can detect extreme ultrasonic signals (>130 kHz) at long distances. Such performance and sensitivity would have the potential to inspire engineers in the design and construction of acoustic sensors and actuators.

Dr Montealegre-Z plans to further his research to study the ears of species of the genus Arachnoscelis which use extreme ultrasonics (130 ? 150kHz) in order to find out how bushcrickets are able to hear each other's high pitched sounds from long distances.

He said: "These results were obtained on a single species, C. gorgonensis, which uses moderate ultrasonic frequencies of 23kHz. However, we have measured other species and have discovered a bushcricket species in the rainforests of South America, which emits sounds at 150kHz. Sounds at these frequencies suffer excess attenuation and would not transmit far in a rainforest environment, therefore limiting long-range communication. Yet they manage to listen to one another from far greater distances. We don't know how they do it, but we do think this sensitivity comes, in part, from the Auditory Vesicle. The University of Lincoln has an excellent team able to continue with this research, while also collaborating with partners at other universities. These findings change our views on insect hearing and open the way for designing ultrasensitive bio-inspired sensors."

Professor Daniel Robert is one of four academics at the University of Bristol's School of Biological Sciences who were part of the research team.

He said: "The ears of this bushcricket are teaching us that complex hearing mechanisms can take place in very small ears. As such we are learning how evolution has come up with very small, efficient and sophisticated microphones. We now have to learn how to make one like this."

Dr Montealegre-Z is planning field research to study katydids in their natural environment in Colombia (Natural National Park Gorgona) with colleagues from the universities of Graz in Austria, Bristol and Strathclyde. Funded by a National Geographic grant the study will entail connecting special electrodes to the katydid sensory system, which will then allow the scientists to hear the same sounds as the insects.

Dr James Windmill, from the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering in the University of Strathclyde's Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, said: "Dr Montealegre's findings will make a valuable contribution to our search for the next generation of ultrasonic engineering technologies. By improving our understanding of insect hearing and sensory systems, we can incorporate new ideas and techniques into a wide range of technologies, including hearing aids, biomedical imaging systems for hospitals, and ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation to assess the structural integrity of buildings and bridges. I look forward to working with Dr Montealegre and colleagues on the next stage of this important research, bringing together bioscience and engineering to create the bio-inspired sensors of the future."
