Santistevan didn't walk a batter and struck out five. Vacaville committed just one error behind him, giving the Crushers only two baserunners all game.
"Elway pitched great. He was in command the whole way," Vacaville head coach Abe Hobbs said. "He had fastball-curveball working, and then the second time through the lineup he started working in the change-up.
"Even when they finally got a hit, he came right back and got the next guy out. He did a great job."
Santistevan also had a solid day at the plate, with three singles, a run scored and an RBI.
The senior was one of nine Bulldogs to collect base hits. Blake Hannah stroked a pair of singles and two runs scored, and Tanner Donaldson and Tyler Stover each added a double two RBI and a run scored.
Vacaville took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the third inning. The Bulldogs added two runs in the sixth, and five more in the seventh.
Cory McGuire, Tyler Cummins, Xavier Alvarez, Drew Chitwood and Ian Acosta also had base hits for Vacaville. Nick Berumen, Clayton Caserza, Kyle Miller, Alvarez, Chitwood and Acosta all scored runs.
Vacaville improved to 3-5 overall. The Bulldogs just finished a punishing nonleague season that featured games against powerhouses St. Ignatius
of San Francisco, De La Salle of Concord and Lincoln of Stockton, among others."I think everyone was pretty excited to get league started," Hobbs said. "You look at those teams we played, almost all of them either won their section of went deep into the playoffs.
"It showed us some real, real quality baseball. It also showed us what we need to work on."
The Bulldogs go back to work in the MEL on Wednesday at home against Armijo.
