We talked with Southern Pines and Panther Pet to see what they're doing to help reunite pets with their owners.

?

"The days following the storm, we got a lot of animals in, but luckily, most of those have been reunited with their owners."

?

Unfortunately there are some animals that have been left behind. Katherine Sammons with Southern Pines Animal Shelter says they're doing what they can to reunite these four-legged friends with their owners. "We're mounting a disaster response."

?

Southern pines will take a team of volunteers starting Sunday morning and going door to door to affected areas. "See if they've lost a pet; make a lost report if they have, so we can hopefully match them with animals here at the shelter."

?

The shelter is an open admissions shelter where no animal is turned away.

?

"We take animals that come to us and we find ourselves overcrowded very quickly."

?

Southern pines along with panther pet hospital are turning to social media to let people know about the lost and found. "We're getting a lot of posts on our Facebook page because people are finding these animals." Facebook posts are going viral. "We shared their picture on Facebook and someone shared it with a lady she knew had lost a beagle, so she called us this morning and came and it was her dog," says Ashley Bahm, veterinarian technician with Panther Pet Hospital.

?

Southern pines will hold animals for five days, if they're not picked up by then they'll be put up for adoption. ?"For a lot of people a pet is like their child. It's a wonderful feeling being able to a part, not only helping the community when they're in need but reuniting them with their lost pets who are really their babies," says Sammons.
