Last week in my junior English class, my teacher gave us a writing assignment.? We were to write a short essay on our philosophy of life.
When I first heard the assignment, I didn't think it seemed too difficult.? Being the type of student who would much rather write an essay than make a poster, I wasn't too concerned with what I would write.? I was excited to write my thoughts out on paper.?
Even though I've never really thought about what my philosophy of life is, I feel that I have a good idea on how I want to live my life. My family has always been the people I look up to and want to model my life after.
My philosophy on life is based on the philosophies of the people around me.
My grandparents have taught me many things. When I'm having a hard time, they always have words of wisdom to share with me. One that is always in the back of my mind is this: No matter how hard you may think you have it, someone out there has it ten times worse.
This could definitely be included in my philosophy of life.? It has taught me to always be helpful and generous.? When I feel like things are going downhill, I remind myself to be thankful for all of the good things in my life.
Alexander Graham Bell said, ?When one door closes, another opens.? When things don't go my way, I always remember that there are other options out there.? Everything happens for a reason, even if I don't know what that reason is.
Keeping this in the back of my mind always helps me get through tough times.? If I don't succeed at something, I know that there is a reason why and that maybe I will succeed in the next thing that I try.
This famous quote by Gandhi has always stood out to me: ?We must be the change we want to see in the world.? It is easy for one to complain about the things that are going on around them, but it takes someone with a lot of courage to actually try to change them. In my life, I never want to sit around and wait for someone else to make the change. I want to strive to be the one who helps make the change.
?Treat others the way you would like to be treated.?? This quote seems to be the simplest to understand.? We were told to follow this in the earliest stages of childhood. Ironically, it seems to be the hardest to follow. We expect others to treat us with the utmost respect, yet we have a hard time doing the same for them.? Sometimes, our expectations of others are unreasonable and hypocritical.?
Few people have an original philosophy of life. We take bits and pieces of the philosophies of those whom we respect and blend them into one, making our own personal philosophy of life.?
I hope that I can do as my family did and help my children and grandchildren form their own philosophy of life.
