The day I became a widow

The day I became a widow

The author and her late husband.

Yesterday I was a wife; today I'm a widow. A 4 a.m. phone call, a voice penetrating the fog of sleep, and just like that, I'm a widow.

I sit on the edge of the bed, shivering; the window is open and the night chill has invaded the bedroom. I pull the comforter around me as I try to make sense of what I just heard. "Are you there, ma'am?" the voice asks. "Yes," I reply. But I am, and I'm not. Instead, I retreat to another place, a familiar one -- my therapist mode where I've spent decades as the one who listens, interprets, analyzes, comforts, cajoles -- and I ask myself: Is it really so cold in this room, or is this what shock feels like? I've read about it, heard patients and friends describe it, offered words I thought were wise, comforting, helpful. But until the moment I sat in that dark room, teeth chattering uncontrollably, unable to bring mind and tongue together to speak coherently, I had no idea what shock really feels like.

The voice on the phone intrudes, pulling me back to his message: Hank, my husband, is dead. I saw him just a few hours ago: living, breathing, holding my hand, kissing it as if trying to take me into himself. Did he know he was dying? Was he saying goodbye? "Ma'am, I need to know you understand what I said." But all I can think is, It's too early to call Marci to tell her that her father is dead. He's patient, my caller, he waits awhile, then asks, "Ma'am, Dr. Rubin, what do you want us to do? We have his instructions, we can call the mortuary and have them pick up the body."

The sound of my name jolts me back to attention for a moment. Years ago we made arrangements for cremation but now, faced with the idea, I balk. "No," I shout into the phone, "don't do anything until I get there." I can't just let him go like that; I have to see him, feel him, hold him one more time. I have to say goodbye and I'm sorry.

Sorry for what? I didn't know then, maybe still don't fully know. But in that moment I was overwhelmed with what Joan Didion calls "magical thinking," and what I might call "survivor guilt" -- the "what ifs" and "if onlys" that come to us when we survive and others don't, the belief that we could have/should have done something to prevent the catastrophe.

I've read about survivor guilt, treated patients suffering it, and know that the symptoms match the feelings that course through me now. But the heart doesn't always grant what the mind knows. So the guilt I feel seems to be mine alone, built on the knowledge that I would sometimes get irrationally angry at him, at life, when the burden of caring for him seemed heavier than I could bear, on the vigilance with which I watched over his care after he no longer lived at home that suggests I was motivated as much by my need to appear the good and loving wife as by my love for him, and maybe worst of all, that I sent him away to be cared for by others when I know, with absolute conviction, that he would never have done that to me.

Could I have prevented the fall that broke a couple of his ribs and ultimately caused his death if I had kept him home? My mind says magical thinking. It's precisely that scenario -- the one where my 6 foot, 190 pound husband fell in the night, and his 5-foot-4, 120-pound wife couldn't lift him without help -- that pushed me into the decision to put him into care. Still, despite some time spent analyzing my feelings with a wise and thoughtful therapist, my heart can't resolve the conflict and guilt. Nor can I, even now, let go of the question: Would his ashes be lying in a peaceful arbor in the University of California at Berkeley Botanical Gardens if I had kept him home?

It was only a few short months ago that I wrote about the problems of living alongside dementia on Salon.com. I recounted there a meeting with a man who wept as he talked about his wife's recent death and his awkward attempts at coping with his new life as a widower and single man. "I left our conversation," I wrote, "feeling sad for him ? and also envious. At least, I thought, he knows what's ahead; he knows the meaning of the word 'widower.' But I'm a widow with a husband who's alive; I'm a single woman with the responsibilities of a wife; I have a future, but I have no idea what it will be or how to get there."

What is it they say: Be careful what you wish for?

Hank died eight days before our 49th anniversary wedding anniversary. It's hard enough to comprehend any death, to grasp the reality that we can go from life to death in the space of a breath. But when it's a mate who dies, a partner with whom you've shared so many years, it shatters a whole life. One 4 a.m. phone call and it's all over -- my marriage, my role in it, a whole world of social and personal life transformed. How do I wrap my mind around it?

True, we hadn't lived together for nearly a year, and I was already living a life quite different from the one we had before dementia intruded. But I could still say "my husband" and could still be his "wife." I had a role to play, and while the responsibilities that went with it may have felt heavy then, they also framed my daily life -- sometimes foreground, sometimes background, but always there. That's gone now, wiped out in that instant when death claimed him and I became a widow.

I say the word, roll it around on my tongue, but I don't know what to make of it, how to live it. What does one do as a widow? What are the rules and norms that govern a widow's behavior? As I live these months and notice the sensitivity with which friends treat me -- the permission they give to my self-involvement, to go over it again and again, to cancel a dinner date with no excuse, no white lie, only the words, "Sorry, I can't" -- I sometimes think that the only legitimate social role left for me is that of grieving widow.

I tell myself it's just a word, but it's not that simple. A word is more than "just a word." It embodies ideas that frame our thoughts, tells us what to expect, even sometimes who we are. Hear the word "wife," and we think of life, husband, family, connection. Just so, "widow" tells its own story, this one a tale of death, aloneness, loss. Not just the loss of a loved other, but of a role we inhabited, a valued part of ourselves and our place in the social world. Wife has expectations, social and personal, present and future. Widow is now, the future unreal, undefined, with no rules, no guides for how to live it.

I sit at my desk filling out one of the many forms that accompany life or death in the modern age, and there's not even a box to check in the "Marital Status" section. Married or single? they ask. I'm not married, single doesn't feel right, but there's no other option. Not that I'm eager to take on the definition of widow. Quite the opposite! I want to stamp my foot like a 2-year-old in a temper tantrum; I want to shout to the world, "I don't want to be a widow, some poor status-less creature who has no role to inhabit except as the bereaved. I want my life back!"

A friend asks me, "Do you really wish Hank, as he was in the last years, were still here?" The question brings back to me a line in a song I heard recently, a lament about life and change, about holding on and letting go, "It's everything you wanted; it's everything you don't" -- words that speak to the complications of heart and mind. So one part of me answers, "No, I don't." I don't want to live with the daily drama of dementia again; I don't want to watch the man I loved for half a century slip away piece-by-piece until there's almost nothing left him, only the body with a mind that's forgotten who he is.

But the mind is a wily creature, and both death and dementia are tailor-made for denial. True, the process is different and more prominent in one than in the other. Dementia tiptoes in, takes its time to make itself fully at home, moves in and out erratically for years, and leaves confusion in its wake. It's the perfect script for a cycle of despair and denial, with brief moments of acceptance along the way. On the bad days, despair reigns; on the good ones, denial takes over, and you turn away the memory of yesterday's confusion and disorientation and hang on to today's moment of coherence.

Death, although unequivocal in its finality, brings its own confusion, and the mind doesn't accept the reality easily. You wake in the middle of the night, reach out to the other side of the bed, and no one is there; you read the newspaper at the breakfast table, begin to share something, and there's no one tell it to; you go to the market, buy food for two, and there's no one to eat it all. As these moments pile up, denial fades, to be replaced by myth-making and idealization of the dead and the shared past. There's nothing and no one to contradict the new construction -- no new experience, no person to push you to know what you know but want to forget, no one to say, "Yes, but ..." And even when someone -- a child, an old friend who was there through the years -- reminds you that it wasn't all as rosy as the story you tell yourself now, it's no trick at all to shut out their meaning.

It isn't that I've totally left reality behind. I can tell myself the stories; I just can't feel them. My head knows that these memories of the before-dementia years are idealized in some ways, that there's a screen or a veil over the difficult and complicated issues that are part of any half-century of living. But my heart cries out, So what? Why do you always have to know? I like these memories just as they are. Leave it alone?

Nothing wrong with that; there's no right way to live with the aftermath of death. But I know that until I can claim the whole of our life together -- before and after, good and bad, joys and tears -- I'll be stuck in the constructed myth of the idyllic before-dementia years and unable to step into whatever the future holds.

We live in a time when it's trendy to be searching for the self, for some core being that reflects the real self, the one that's not filtered through the set of roles, norms and expectations that any society imposes. "Maybe it's time to just be," a friend counsels. "Maybe this is your time to let go, give up all the rest, and just be authentically you." But it's a false god we seek, for there is no self outside of society.

What does it mean to just be? I try to make sense of the words, but it's as if we're speaking from two different worlds. How can I just be something when I can't understand what that means? Who am I without the various roles I've lived all these years: wife, mother, friend, psychologist, sociologist, writer -- each new one opening up a part of the self, each sometimes enhancing, sometimes limiting other parts. Sure, depending on the demands of the moment, one is foreground, the others background. But no matter what their position, they are all crucial parts of the self that has defined me, not just to the world but to myself as well. What do I do now with the me that was Hank's wife for the last 49 years of my life? Was that not an authentic part of me? Was I just playing a role?

In his famous book, "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life," the sociologist Erving Goffman uses the metaphor of the theater to limn what he calls the "front stage" and "backstage" arenas of the roles we play in our own lives. It's a great metaphor, and we know intuitively that it's true -- that there are front stage (think: job, cocktail party, grocery store) and backstage (think: home, family, friends, alone-time) parts of our lives. We know that we show a different face at a parent-teacher conference than we do at home later that day when we're tired and irritable and the kids won't go to bed. We know, too, that a different part of our self comes to the fore when we're sharing a glass of wine with a close friend than with a colleague who may sit in judgment at our next promotion review.

But it's only a metaphor, not the story. For life is more than theater, our roles more than performances. They are also deeply rooted parts of ourselves that can be very difficult to sever, even when we choose to do so. We may, for example, think about retirement for years, construct fantasies of "the good life" when we don't have to go to work every day. But it's a different story when we face the reality of losing the role that identified us to ourselves and in the world for so long. In the research for a book I published a few years ago, "Sixty On Up: The Truth About Aging in the 21st Century," I spoke with dozens of retired men and women who were struggling to adapt to the new role and the definition of self that flows from that. As one man said to me then, "I thought if I could play golf three-four times a week, I would feel as if I'd died and gone to heaven. But turns out I miss the job, the guys I worked with -- the whole thing, like who I was then. I mean, I love golf, but c'mon, there's got to be more to life than that."

And this was a role change they sought and that also does have some rewards.? Think about how much harder it is when death chooses for you, when you're torn from a cherished role to one without reward -- from wife to widow -- in the blink of an eye.

But what have I done here? Have I retreated to the intellect, the mind, because I can't tolerate the emptiness of the heart? Perhaps. But in putting these thoughts on paper, maybe I'm also closer to bringing together mind and heart, past and present -- and with it the way to the unknown future that lies before me.

Is there a lesson for others here? I don't know. For while becoming a widow -- the shock, the disorientation, the shaken sense of self, the unknown future -- is much the same for a 50-year-old as it is for someone like me who has ascended to the ranks of what the gerontologists call "the old-old," being a widow at midlife is very different from the experience in old age. Not easier, just different -- different problems in the present, different possibilities for a future.

What I do know is that there are times in a life when, no matter how many loved ones surround us, we must walk alone. Becoming a widow is one of those times. And the path to being a widow, the ability to find a future and live it well, lies inside me. It's true, as I've said, that widow is more than just a word. But it's equally true that it is also just a word. It has no magic qualities to force itself upon me; I have choices to make. A door closed on a part of my life, and if there's another waiting to open, my mind and heart both tell me that I'll only find my way to it by mobilizing the parts that are left.?

Crime against women Lastupdate:- Tue, 28 Jun 2011 18:30:00 GMT ...

?India is the fourth most dangerous place for? women in the world . This revelation by? a poll survey of Reuters Thompson? Foundation is a sad commentary on the? state of affairs? of women in the country. The sadder? fact is that? it took a foreign foundation to find? out the truth about the status of women in India. And? the kind of crimes that are being committed against them in? Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir and Mumbai, where girls are being raped, murdered ,? their bodies stuffed in boxes will put to shame even the most horrifying criminal society in the world..
In this country,? a lot of lip service is paid to the womens? liberties, their rights and?? empowerment. The promises of protection galore , but when? it comes to? creating a space for women in society, where they can live and work with respect,? crime is? unleashed against them. This is a design to tell the women? that they have to be? targets of violence and crime because that is how the rulers and the powerful men? have come to treat the women in? all states of the country .
?There are several points to ponder. The crime? against women? from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, the? usual geographical and political description of India , is? being perpetrated? not by men alone. The women are equal partners.? For example, in the?? cases of female foeticide? or dowry . This illicit? partnership encourages criminals in society to? do more criminal acts? against the? women of all ages.
Unless the women?? refuse to be a party to the crime? against their daughter-in-laws, sister-in-laws and? would be daughters ,? it is inevitable that there would be more horrifying stories? at all levels .? The women will have to wake up, and rise against the criminal mindset gaining ground in society . It is? because? when criminals are? around, there are no peace times. It is? perpetual turbulent situation , a permanent situation of conflict? dawn to dusk ear and sense of insecurity.
Politicisation of? voices against crime is the worst thing to happen. That is happening in? India. It is more shocking when? women leaders seek absurd justification? in crime against their own gender .? It was highly atrocious on part of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Ms? Mayawati, one of the four women chief ministers in India , to say that more rapes are committed in Mumbai on daily basis than Uttar Pradesh. How can? any rape be justified? by drawing comparisons between? one state? and the other simply on the grounds that the two are ruled by two? different political parties. In her competitive politics?? with Congress and BJP, Ms. Mayawati forgot that she,? was, in a way, giving license to criminals . What was she defending? The less number of rapes against women in her state? as a yardstick of a? better law and order situation than Mumbai, or was she? trying to tell that? criminals in her state? have not? yet?? matched the records of Mumbai in such crimes so far.
This type of absurdity is not new . the political parties are? masters in this game . It hardly matters whether they are headed by men or women . But , now this has assumed?? horrendous proportions .? At the same time , the logic that only the parties?? or the governments headed by women? should be seen protecting the women, which in any case they are not doing, be it Congress, Trinamool Congress, AIADMK , PDP, BSP , doesnt hold? much water. This is, and it should be the collective responsibility of? all the parties, be it BJP, CPI-M, National Conference, Akali Dal,? DMK? or so on .
During the past two decades, Kashmir has? scaled new and horrendous? heights in? crime against women. The women were raped, kidnapped, murdered , molested , and more often than not, they opted? for silence .? The culprits were? from all sides. A rape is a rape . It is a crime. So is murder, So is molestation , and so is? harassment in fields, jungles and? midnight knocks . The crime cannot be pardoned . But unfortunately, there? is a justification of crime. There are excuses and excuses only. No? one can claim to be protecting the place and population? as there is no control on gun and tongue . They are our boys, this term doesnt give right to any side , whether in uniform or? civvies to commit crime against women.
What has? emboldened these elements , is that their? horrendous acts of crime against women ,? are ignored.? The? institutions and the people who should be paying attention? to curb the crime, often turn a blind eye .? There is a tendency to?? ignore all these acts , because taking action against the culprits or speaking against them,? is considered politically? incorrect,. Or? for that matter,? taking action against these powerful people in? politics or bureaucracy , with? tonnes of illicit money and muscle power, harms the self interests? of politicians and the institutions that are supposed to protect and get justice for the victims .
It is time to understand that there is a common challenge and? urgency? of a common response? to this growing menace in society.? The? need? of the hour is to give an expression of shared responsibility to the shared sense of crisis and an acute and growing concern over the violence and criminality affecting women.? Everyone knows the statistics, the murder rates, rapes , the violence that burdens economic development, and threats to democracy .? No amount of? participation in any polls would help the matters if the crime? in society, particularly against women , is not eliminated . Fighting crime is more important than anything else.
Many in Kashmir are living these brutal facts every single day.? And the basic truth is? that no single party or government can overcome these facts on its own. There is need? to devise a shared strategy and will to implement? that .Kashmir set an example for rest of the country. Can it do it ? This is the common challenge .

Major online poker room ordered to halt operations (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? One of the largest online poker rooms, Full Tilt Poker, was ordered Wednesday to immediately halt operations by authorities on the Channel Island of Alderney, where it is registered, the regulator said.

The Gambling Control Commission of Alderney said it had suspended the licence of Full Tilt Poker after US authorities charged 11 people in April in a crackdown on Full Tilt and two other online poker companies.

"The decision to suspend the eGambling licence was in the public interest and because of the seriousness and urgency of the matter," Andre Wilsenach, the executive director of the commission, said in a statement.

There will now be a regulatory hearing on July 26 in London.

It said the decision followed a "special investigation" after the founders of Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars and Absolute Poker were among those charged with bank fraud, money laundering, illegal gambling and other offenses in an indictment unsealed on April 15 by the US attorney for the southern district of New York.

The investigation found there were grounds "to indicate that these licences and their business associates were operating contrary to Alderney legislation".

While Internet gambling has been illegal in the United States since 2006, online poker remains a multi-billion industry with companies using a variety of ways to flout the law, including locating their operations offshore.

The US ban on Internet gambling has been challenged as an unfair trade restriction at the World Trade Organization.

France's online gaming legislator on June 16 fined Full Tilt poker 10,000 euros (14,400 dollars) for failing to store information properly.

Arts and Entertainment,Celebrity Gossip News - Do you know of a ...

My brother makes short movies featuring lightsaber duels. He creates the effects frame by frame using the GIMP. Is there a film editing software that makes this process more convenient and smooth ? such as, not having to do the animated inserts frame by from?

Free downloads are desirable if available, of course, but any reliable program would be nice to know about.

Adobe After effects
PARCTICLEILLUSION (magic particles, etc?)
LSMAKER (lightsaber maker)

Blender, if he's willing to invest the time into learning compositing.

On my opinion best special effects software is Adobe After Effect CS4!
Also i tested VisionLab Studio it is very good but AE is my first choice.
download VisionLab Studio here:
frostapps.com/downloadmaster.?
or google it.

There are several methods for creating lightsaber effects on live action video. I have an article on ehow.com that summarizes popular techniques.

Wii U not a threat that requires PS4, says Sony

"If you're looking at high def gaming, that was 2006 for us," said SCEA boss Jack Tretton, who reckons Nintendo's Wii U unveiling revealed nothing that spurs Sony into thinking it needs to release a PlayStation 4.

Speaking with Forbes on new hardware, Tretton said, "I think there's ground to be carved out for everybody. But I didn't see anything about Nintendo's announcement that said 'Oh, we'd better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon.'"

He went on: "Our attitude is kind of 'welcome to the party.' If you're looking at being a multimedia entertainment device, if you're looking at high def gaming, that was 2006 for us."

Besides that, Tretton explains that the PS3 has just started and that an evolutionary jump would, at this moment, be of minimal benefit. "PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride. And technologically, I don't think it's possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have," he said.

"What we've seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3. We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period. But now I think that all pays off, and we've got a long run way behind it. So, I wouldn't look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time."

The Wii U is Nintendo's next console, headlining with HD 1080p visuals and a controller equipped with a touch screen. Although Sony has said that the Wii U controller screen concept could be replicated with the PS3 and PlayStation Vita (the next-gen PSP).

Crytek has this weekend denied a rumour claiming it had begun development on next-gen hardware, saying its focus remains on current tech.

A Four Step System to Building Positive Relationships

Children oftentimes learn how to make relationships by two main efforts. Trial and error is one and the second is through modeling.

I have noticed, for better and for worse, that children will often model their parents. Seems obvious right? They may never agree to doing so, but the child will oftentimes be alike, or rebel for a moment and nonetheless be conditioned from their environment.

What happens when children have poor role models or no role models to learn from?

They become poor relationship builders or they acquire some not-so-positive behaviors that may sabotage relationships before they begin.

What if we had a system that would build relationships? How would our (or your) world change if there was a system that, when followed, built positive and enriching relationships. Would this make a difference? Is this possible?

I believe it is.

My system includes four main parts and they are all teachable. Here are the steps and you can practice right now.

The first step is to listen. I have a favorite quote; "Listen with the eyes and hear with the heart." This means to simply silent your mind while another person is speaking. Allow our own emotions to flow through us without thinking about them. This will allow us to NOT judge another person's words and it will keep us from thinking of our own retort before the person is finished speaking. Listening is a skill that is learn-able and teachable.

Who taught you how to listen?

The second step is to speak from your perspective only. This entails using "I" statements and not broad generalizations. For example, "I feel neglected" as opposed to "We feel neglected" in reference to perhaps a classroom or group of employees. This is so powerful because we all have our own truths. We can only come from where "we" are and not from where others are--because we truly do not know! Again, speaking from your perspective is learn-able and it is a skill that can be practiced.

The third step is to feel empathy. We cannot get to this step without learning the first two. This is because we have to relate to our own heart first before we can feel what another person might feel. Empathy is simply feeling what another person feels. "Walking in another person's shoes." We do this when we listen completely and "feel" what the person is going through. We can then state our truth to explain to the other person that we "get it." We can relate because we feel them. This is incredibly powerful at making connections with other people.

The final step is to feel sympathy. I define sympathy as; feeling what another person feels with a desire to bring them into a better place. To me this is the intention of mentoring. We can all help people with challenges and it comes from sympathy. Once you feel someone and understand where they are at emotionally you probably can help them get into a better place. You have to care about yourself first before you can care about other people.

This system is proven and backed by people's research. And you can use it right now. The hardest part I think most people encounter is listening silently enough to hear what the other person is saying. People speak louder with their bodies and actions rather than their mouth. In other words, there is more to the message than what people say. Get quiet, watch their eyes, shoulders, hands, and heart and you will begin to feel them.

The system is available in more depth at http://www.MiddleSchoolCounselor.com.

Matthew Kuehlhorn is the Teenager's Counselor. He has created a system for building positive and effective relationships which is presented in the co-created, illustrated novel, "Bully." He has authored Transforming Guidelines which is bringing the relationship building system into classrooms and other small communities.

Matthew's efforts support mentoring benefits and teaching with graphic novels. On his website, http://www.MiddleSchoolCounselor.com he runs a community blog for people 12-17, has parent and teacher resources, and continually develops a community resource center for teenagers who want to learn the "Rules of the Road, Business, Finance, Life."

He teaches financial literacy, addresses bullying, and through his mentoring and coaching programs he will help any teenager attain the goals they are setting out to reach. Matthew develops entrepreneurial spirits and focuses on "igniting the inner voice" that is within each one of us.

Matthew has been working with people of all ages for twelve years (as of 2011) and he sees a "Perfect Storm" brewing which consists of schools cutting back on student support resources and parents working harder and harder to provide a lifestyle for their family. This leaves teenagers in the swells and they need help.

Blake Griffin gets Vizio Tablet before you can, proves famous people get special treatment (updated)

Being Blake Griffin has its perks -- he's NBA Rookie of the Year and a millionaire, plus he's got the adoration of millions and the ability to posterize fools with prodigious power dunks. He also got the Vizio tablet before it goes on sale to the general public, and posted a video showing off his new VIA Plus-equipped slate. We're glad that Blake Superior's enjoying the tablet's portrait and landscape stereo speakers and its universal remote function... really, we are. But, we'd rather be watching him catch alley-oops and throw down windmills on a tablet of our very own -- c'mon Vizio, quit playing favorites.

[Thanks, Ben]

Update: Looks like you'll be able to join Blake on the Vizio bandwagon soon, as the folks at This is my next got a pic showing that Walmart's already putting the tablet's $349 price tag on store shelves.

Obama: If debt limit not raised, new financial crisis (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama warned on Tuesday there could be another global financial crisis if Congress failed to raise the national debt ceiling.

But in an interview with NBC's "Today" show, Obama also said he took Republican leaders at their word that they want to avoid such a situation and he expects a deal to increase the debt limit "in a sensible way."

"The full faith and credit of the United States is the underpinning not only of our way of life, it's also the underpinning of a global financial system. We could actually have a reprise of a financial crisis, if we play this too close to the line. So we're going be working hard over the next month," he said.

Oil prices drop despite fall in US stockpiles (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? World oil prices slid Wednesday despite a fall in stockpiles of US crude, with analysts saying the figures did not point to a pick-up in energy demand in top consumer the United States.

New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in July, lost 90 cents to $98.47 a barrel.

Brent North Sea crude for July shed $1.91 to $118.25 in late London deals. Losses for Brent were exaggerated by profit-taking on the contract's last trading day.

The US Department of Energy (DoE) said crude stockpiles slumped 3.4 million barrels last week, six times greater than expected by analysts.

Rather than a spike in demand, the drop was largely due to supply disruption, redit Agricole analyst Christophe Barret said.

"DoE weekly statistics showed a relatively large drop in crude stocks for the second consecutive week, likely to reflect disruption in Canadian crude supplies," he said.

On Tuesday, the American Petroleum Institute forecast a three-million-barrel decrease in crude oil inventories for the week ending June 10, double initial predictions and a sign that demand was picking up.

Oil prices rallied on Tuesday in nervous trade, with New York crude closing up two dollars as the market welcomed encouraging US economic data.

John Kilduff of Again Capital had suggested that Tuesday's rises had been a technical rebound after two down days.

Goldman Sachs meanwhile warned in a market analysis that the bigger picture is rising demand forcing a tightening of supply.

"With world economic growth continuing to drive oil demand growth well in excess of non-OPEC production growth, the oil market continues to draw on inventories and OPEC spare capacity in order to balance," Goldman analysts said.

"In our view, it is only a matter of time until inventories and OPEC spare capacity will become effectively exhausted, requiring higher oil prices to restrain demand, keeping it in line with available supplies," they added.

Official data this week showed industrial output from China, the world's largest energy consumer, rose sharply in May.

Sustained growth in the Chinese industrial sector would translate to strong crude demand as the Asian economic powerhouse seeks energy to fuel its thousands of workshops and factories.

China's monthly inflation climbs to 5.5 per cent

The year-on-year rise of 5.5 per cent in the monthly consumer price index is expected to add pressure on the government to take more measures to stabilize rising food prices, which rose 11.7 per cent over the past year.

The monthly producer price index, which tracks inflation in wholesale prices, also jumped by 6.8 per cent year-on-year in May, the National Bureau of Statistics said.

The government set a target of 4 per cent for annual inflation but consumer prices have risen by more than 5 per cent for the past three months.

Inflation has persisted despite four interest rate hikes since October and several increases in banks\' reserve requirement ratio.

The Chinese government has set a broad target for economic growth of 8 per cent this year while the World Bank has forecast 9.3-per-cent growth.

Samsung Galaxy Tabs used to create Smart Schools in Korea

Samsung Smart School

While schools in America have decided to adopt the iPad for educational purposes, on the other side of the world, in South Korea, they prefer to use the Samsung Galaxy Tab Android tablet instead. Samsung and Daegu high school have agreed to create a ?Smart School? by using Samsung?s Android tablets in the classroom, for sharing educational content. Specialized classrooms will be created according to subjects or SCAS (a system where students migrate to a particular classroom depending to their learning abilities).

The Galaxy Tabs will be preloaded with apps and a specially optimized UI with RFID functions that provide teachers with convenient tools for managing students. Teachers will also be able to use the tablets to communicate with kids and their parents ? making sending report cards less of a hassle than it used to be. Not to mention, kids won?t be able to forget to bring their cards home ? if they?re digital. Teachers can just mail them to parents as well.

It?s nice seeing technology used to help out in the education system. Perhaps in the future, paper books will be completely replaced, making the classroom green as well as modern. I wish I had tablets to play around with when I was back in school. Times really have changed!

Canucks' Rome disagrees with ban for Horton hit

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome (29) skates past medical personnel tending to Bruins right wing Nathan Horton during Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals.

BOSTON - Vancouver defenseman Aaron Rome wouldn't change much about the hit on Boston's Nathan Horton that got him suspended for the rest of the Stanley Cup finals.

Rome spoke Sunday for the first time about his finals-record four-game suspension after skating with the Canucks in practice heading into Game 6 on Monday.

"I've got to play on the edge, and I guess that was a little bit over the edge," Rome said.

While Rome has sympathy for Horton, who's out for the series with a concussion, he doesn't feel he did anything extraordinarily dangerous in their fast, hard-hitting sport when he flattened Horton early in Game 3 last week. Rome said he sent a text message to Horton, but hadn't heard back.

"It's a split-second decision," Rome said. "There's no intent to hurt anybody. If I could go back, obviously I'd wish he didn't get hurt, but I don't think I'd change the decision on the play."

Rome delivered his hit after Horton made a pass near the blue line, leaving the Boston forward unconscious on the ice. Horton left the building on a stretcher, and the Bruins rode a wave of emotion to consecutive victories at home.

While Rome was vilified in Boston, his teammates jumped to his defense, claiming a four-game ban was excessive and unprecedented. Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault thought the hit was late, but remained supportive of Rome.

Although Rome's ban is four times longer than any suspension handed out in finals history, he hasn't appealed it, hinting that he feels such a move is pointless. Rome said the NHL's suspension criteria were "arbitrary," and he doesn't understand why the league ended his chance to skate for the Stanley Cup after a hit he believes was barely illegal.

"I've got to step up. I've got to be physical," Rome said. "That's just part of my game. There has to be some accountability on the part of the player skating with the puck up the middle of the ice, maybe with his head down, not looking. If I had been half a second earlier, a quarter of a second earlier, I probably wouldn't be in this situation."

Rome understands why Horton might not be returning his texts, noting he felt similar emotions after San Jose's Jamie McGinn boarded him from behind during the Western Conference finals, giving Rome an apparent concussion that forced him to sit out two games.

Rome had no significant history as a dirty player before this hit. The journeyman defenseman has played in 131 NHL games with three clubs over the past five seasons, bouncing up and down from the AHL before earning a full-time job in Vancouver this year.

Yet his hit inspired the Bruins. Before Game 4, Hall of Famer Bobby Orr waved a flag with Horton's name and No. 18 on it during a stirring pregame tribute.

Horton's injury was the most serious development in an uncommonly bad-tempered finals, which began with Vancouver forward Alex Burrows' apparent bite of Patrice Bergeron's finger, followed by related taunts from both teams. Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo also made headlines after Game 5 with comments deemed to be disrespectful of Boston goalie Tim Thomas.

Vancouver leads the series 3-2 going into Monday's game.

Rome's absence has forced the Canucks to use every bit of their deep defensive corps. After veteran Keith Ballard replaced Rome in Game 4, Vancouver rookie Chris Tanev played splendidly in Game 5 as the Canucks pushed Boston to the brink of elimination.

Rome will be a spectator for the rest of June, but he's still working up a sweat in the Canucks' practices.

"You want to be a part of it," Rome said. "Just because I'm not playing, I'm not going to mope about it and hide in a cave. It's a way to relieve some stress and be part of it. ... This is nothing that you want to go through, but it makes you stronger and makes you look on the bright side of things."

Register/Modify Active Directory Schema Snap-in in Windows Server 2008

In active directory network infrastructure schema plays an important role as it helps defining the complete structure to the object classes and their attributes. Whenever an application is installed in an active directory domain controller schema is automatically updated and is modified according to the nature of the installed application. An example for this can be Exchange Server which tightly integrates itself with Windows server 2003 and/or Windows server 2008 and therefore it modifies the schema of the operating system on its own. In many cases however administrators may want to modify the schema manually in order to perform some special tasks. Doing this is not at all recommended but still if you want to modify schema on a Windows server 2008 domain controller you are required to register schema snap-in in order to get it in Microsoft Management Console or MMC. Process of registering schema snap-in is given as below:

1.?????? Make sure that you are logged on to Windows server 2008 domain controller with any account that possesses domain admin crown.

2.?????? At the bottom of start menu in search box type REGSVR32 SCHMMGMT.DLL and press enter key to register the schema.

Register Schema

3.?????? Click on Ok button to acknowledge the confirmation of registration of schema snap in.

4.?????? In the search box again type MMC and press enter key to open Microsoft Management Console.

5.?????? On the opened console box go to File menu and from the available options click on Add/Remove Snap-in to add Active Directory Schema snap-in.
