Egypt's president heads to Turkey to build ties

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi travels to Turkey on Sunday to strengthen an emerging alliance between two moderate Islamist governments in a region beset by conflict and instability.

Even though Morsi has only been in power for a few months, there are already strong signs a partnership with Turkey is forming, evidenced by a common effort to end Syria's civil war by urging the exit of President Bashar Assad from power.

Earlier this month, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu visited the Egyptian capital Cairo and pledged $2 billion in aid to boost confidence in an economy badly battered by a tourism slump, strikes and ongoing protests since the fall of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak in an uprising last year.

During the 12-hour visit, Morsi will try to strengthen economic ties with Turkey - a country his Muslim Brotherhood group views as an Islamist success story, mixing a strong economy with Western ties and Islamic piety.

Turkey, a NATO member with a mostly Muslim, but not Arab, population, has been touted as a democratic model for Egypt and other Arab countries swept up in popular revolts over the past two years.

After initially looking to the Turkish ruling party as a role model, the Islamic fundamentalist Brotherhood in Egypt has cooled to the idea because of Turkey's strong secular leanings. Morsi and the Brotherhood, on the contrary, have been criticized by their opponents for pushing a more conservative Islamist line, particularly in drafting the country's new constitution.

"Before the revolution, we saw (Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip) Erdogan's regime ... as a successful model that can be emulated," said Dina Zakaria, a member of the foreign relations committee of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party. "But can it be with all its details and can it all suit Egyptian society? Of course not."

Turkish officials and media have voiced enthusiasm for the relationship with Cairo after the uprising. Turkish President Abdullah Gul was the first foreign leader to visit Egypt after Mubarak stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011, meeting with both the largely liberal and secular youth groups that spearheaded the pro-democracy revolt as well as with generals from the ruling military council who took over from Mubarak and then eventually transferred power to the democratically elected Morsi.

Erdogan got a warm welcome in Cairo last year, with crowds of Brotherhood supporters lining the airport road upon his arrival, some of them carrying banners reading: "Erdogan is a hero."

Erdogan has encouraged Egypt to mimic the Turkish model of governance.

But Zakaria said that after frequent visits to Turkey and meetings with different groups there, she is convinced Egyptian society would not accept Turkey's secular constitution.

Many in conservative Egypt equate the term secularism with "anti-Islam." As efforts to draft the country's constitution are marred by disputes over what many liberals perceive as overtly Islamist clauses in the charter, Zakaria ruled out drawing inspiration from the Turkish constitution.

"Their constitution won't work here in Egypt," she said. "There are things Egyptian people won't accept," she added, referring mainly to the separation of religion and he state.

One of the founding principles of Turkey's constitution is that it is a secular democracy, something that contradicts Egypt's old constitution, and is not even considered in the writing of the new charter. Debate remains in Egypt over whether to keep the current charter, which cites the principles of Islamic law as the basis of legislation, or to harden it to include a reference to specific Islamic laws which would guide all legislation.

Jay-Z rocks Brooklyn arena he helped get built

Carlo Allegri / Reuters

Jay-Z performs on stage at the newly built Barclays Center in the Brooklyn borough of New York on Friday, Sept. 28.

By Simon Vozick-Levinson, Rolling Stone

"I've been on many stages, been around the world, but nothing feels like tonight," Jay-Z told the crowd Friday night during his inaugural blow-out at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. He reeled off a few of the other noted houses he's rocked: the Grammys, Glastonbury, Coachella, Bonnaroo, the Apollo Theater. "Nothing feels like tonight, Brooklyn. I swear to God."

Jay's performance -- the first ever in the newly constructed venue, with seven more sold-out shows scheduled over the next week -- was a many-layered milestone. While he famously grew up in Brooklyn's Marcy Houses, this was his first major show of this size in his home borough. As partial owner of the NBA's rechristened Brooklyn Nets, he helped get this billion-dollar basketball arena built not far from his old neighborhood. His rise to this level of success and cultural power is an incredible American story, and he is justifiably proud.

He opened the show aptly with 1997's classic "Where I'm From." It's a staple of his live sets, a song he's performed hundreds of times if not more. Friday night?-- center stage in jeans and a black puffy vest over a custom Nets jersey, gold chains hanging down his chest -- he attacked the verses with a new force, spitting out precise syllables: "I'm from where the hammers rung, news cameras never come. ..."

Jay stood alone under a spotlight on the narrow stage, backed by a huge sloping video screen and a tight live band built into perches above him. He paid tribute to a fallen mentor early on by building the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Kick in the Door" and "Juicy" into the set list. Later, shortly after an authoritative "99 Problems," he walked to a far corner of the stage and retrieved a glittering gold bottle, requesting respectful silence as he poured out a little bubbly for Biggie: "See, you can stunt like that when you own the whole place." He turned reflective, reminiscing aloud about his journey from the projects to this stage. "You don't mind if I take my time? I'm really overwhelmed a little bit."

He channeled the night's emotions into a top-notch rendition of the hit parade he's road tested at festivals and arenas over the last few years, covering his career from 1996's "Reasonable Doubt" to 2009's "The Blueprint 3" in a little over an hour. He delivered the key lines in 2001's great "Heart of the City" with extra emphasis, punching the air as he rapped, "I told you in '96 that I came to take this [expletive], and I did."

Fans arrive for the first of eight Jay-Z shows at the new Barclays Center.

As the main set wound down, Jay-Z looked out at the crowd of 18,000 reverent fans, savoring the moment. "What an amazing feeling tonight," he said again. "This night was a dream." He thanked everyone sincerely while the chords of 2003's "Encore" rolled quietly on. Someone in the crowd passed a Brooklyn Dodgers jersey with Jackie Robinson's name on it up to the stage, and he held it up with pride: "Look how far we've come."

Jay told Rolling Stone a few days ago?that there would be no guests at his Barclays Center shows. ("This is my one chance to be selfish!" he kidded.) He kept that promise until the encore, when he surprised the arena by bringing out Bed-Stuy legend Big Daddy Kane, who ripped through 1988's "Ain't No Half-Steppin'" and 1989's "Warm It Up, Kane," while busting out some old-school moves (complete with a full jumping split) with his original backup dancers Scoob and Scrap. "We have to understand our history," said Jay-Z appreciatively.

"OK, I'm still not ready to leave," he went on after Kane left, drawing deafening cheers. Jay ran through a couple of recent guest verses -- reveling in the double-time flow of G.O.O.D. Music's "Clique" and the luxurious style of Rick Ross' "3 Kings." "I got a million of these!" he crowed.

But the hour was growing late. Jay-Z sent us home with a heartfelt speech about the "genius-level talent" that he feels lies within everyone. "I ain't no different from anyone in this room, and now I'm standing on this stage, living proof," he said. And with that, it was finally time to say goodbye?-- if only so he could rest up for all the other shows he has coming up. "There's no [expletive] curfew," he said with a grin. "But I've really got to go."

Traditional or charter schools? Actually, they help each other, study says.

A new study suggests that best practices from charter schools can help student achievement at underperforming public schools. The issue is getting the two to cooperate.

By Allison Terry,?Contributor / September 27, 2012

Charter schools are not a silver bullet for education reform, a new report says, but applying the best practices from some charter schools to low-performing public schools may increase student achievement.

Early data show that the strategy ? applied in Houston and Denver pilot programs ? yielded ?promising? results, according to the report, titled "Learning from the Successes and Failures of Charter Schools" and released Thursday by the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution.

The study could help improve cooperation between charter schools and traditional schools, which have often viewed each other as competitors. The debate about whether charter schools or traditional schools are more effective is a false one and misses the central point, said secretary of Education Arne Duncan at the Hamilton Project?s education forum Thursday in Washington.

?The question isn?t: Do we need more charter schools, traditional schools, gifted schools, or magnet schools?? he said. ?We need better public schools. Kids don?t know what kind of school they go to. All they ask is, ?Do I have a good teacher?? ?

The report focuses on the work that Harvard economics professor Roland Fryer did with the Houston Independent School District (HISD) to develop a pilot program targeting nine of Houston?s lowest-performing middle and high schools in 2010-11 and 11 elementary schools in 2011-12.

Dr. Fryer, who is the faculty director of Harvard?s Education Innovations Laboratories (EdLabs), studied 35 charter schools in New York and discovered the top five practices that separate low- and high-achieving charter schools: (1) extended time at school, (2) strong administrators and teachers, (3) data-driven instruction, (4) small-group tutoring, and (5) creating a ?culture of high expectations.?

Fryer and HISD superintendent Terry Grier used grants from the US Department of Education and private funding ? together totaling $2,200 per student ? to implement the five practices. To meet those goals, the schools:

  1. Extended the academic year by five days and added one hour to each day.
  2. Replaced 53 percent of the teachers and all of the school principals.
  3. Assessed the students every six weeks, reviewed the effectiveness of teaching methods from the data they had gathered, and set new goals.
  4. Gave sixth- and ninth-graders two-on-one math instruction by full-time tutors.
  5. Established a culture of high expectations by posting goals in the classrooms.

Electronics Sensors that Dissolve Could Keep Tabs on the Body from the Inside [Video]

Most people appreciate electronics that are durable and can last for years before needing to be replaced. If the device in question is a medical implant or a sensor for monitoring environmental conditions, however, designers might prefer the gadget to simply biodegrade without a trace once its purpose is fulfilled.

University of Illinois researchers, working with colleagues at Tufts University and Northwestern University, report in the September 28 issue of Science having developed a way to make ?transient? electronics able to do just that by dissolving in small amounts of bodily fluid. Other triggers for dissolution and absorption by the body might someday include heat, radiation and pH levels.

The research described in Science is notable because it describes a wide array of dissolvable, or ?bioresorbable,? electronics, including transistors, diodes, wireless power coils, sensors and even a 64-pixel digital camera. These bioresorbable electronics are a new twist on degradable medical implants, which are also seeing innovations. Abbott Labs, for instance, recently introduced a vascular scaffold, or stent, that can be used for the treatment of coronary artery disease, restoring blood flow to the heart before dissolving in the body.

The researchers who reported in Science succeeded in creating dissolvable electronics by keeping the components extremely thin and selecting materials such as magnesium, magnesium oxide and silicon that function in electronics but are not toxic to the body. The amount of the mineral magnesium in one device, for example, is actually lower than that in a multivitamin, according to the researchers.

To demonstrate how these devices might work, the researchers fabricated a variety of transient devices, sealed them in water-soluble silk packages, sterilized the packages and implanted them under the skin in mice. In this instance, the implanted devices delivered a drug meant to prevent bacterial infections at surgical wound sites in the animals.

The structure of the silk?collected from silkworm cocoons?determines how quickly it dissolves, whether at a rate of minutes, days, weeks or longer. Tufts engineers, including biomedical engineering professor Fiorenzo Omenetto, who contributed to this project, have for years been developing electronic and photonic materials by patterning metals or thin films onto silk?s surface.

This current research furthers the work of John Rogers, the University of Illinois engineering professor who led the multidisciplinary research team, in the area of biological medical sensors. In October 2010 Rogers co-authored a paper in Nature Materials describing flexible light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that might someday be implanted in the body. Although the practical uses of this technology still need to be worked out, Rogers speculated at the time that LEDs might be integrated with tissue in the body and alert physicians to the presence and location of infections after a surgical procedure. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

Backed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) the researchers are refining their devices for specific applications, conducting more animal tests and working with a semiconductor foundry to determine when such components could be manufactured in large volumes.

Los Angeles, CA (September 27, 2012) Since the newspaper industry started to experience a major decrease in readership in recent years, many people have deemed the internet and other forms of new media as the culprits. However, a recent study published in the Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, a SAGE Journal, finds that sales are down because readers need more engaging and stimulating content.

Study authors Rachel Davis Mersey, Edward C. Malthouse, and Bobby J. Calder suggested that it is crucial for journalists and practitioners to focus their efforts on creating stimulating content in order to "curb the tide" of newspaper abandonment. In order to test their hypothesis, they selected 52 newspapers nationwide, and issued a series of surveys to their readers to find out exactly what they wanted.

The study authors discovered that readers are looking for more engaging content and offered a few suggestions that could help newspaper organizations provide more variety.

Mersey, Malthouse, and Calder suggested that newspaper journalists could include "a question of the day around a major, local, or even barely known but interesting news story that runs on the front page and is designed to encourage conversation among readers and between readers and the newsroom." After search, family finds body of 18-year-old outside Central City ...

After hours of knocking on doors and searching?abandoned houses in?Central City,?a search team comprised of family, friends and neighbors finally?found?18-year-old Jamal Christian, who had been missing since Sunday. Lying face?down behind some bushes outside an elementary school playground, Christian was dead, shot once in the back, police said.

New Orleans police are investigating whether Christian?was injured Sunday night during a shooting that followed a second-line parade near South Robertson and St. Andrew streets.

According to John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish coroner's office, the gunshot wound indicated that Christian was shot 24 to 36 hours before his body was found outside the Mahalia Jackson Early Childhood & Learning Center in the 2400 block of Jackson Avenue.

Christian's family had reported him missing Monday about 8 p.m., said police spokesman Frank Robertson III.

Following the Sunday shooting, police had actively looked for a second gunshot victim after witnesses reported that two men had been shot, though only one had been located. That victim had been shot in the foot, Robertson said.

"We exhausted all kinds of man hours like we do with any missing person case," Robertson said. "This case was relatively new. I don't think we had done fliers as of yet, but it's a process we do."

But neighbors criticized the police response, saying they saw officers driving around the streets near the shooting, but never walking the neighborhood on foot.

Christian's mother, Tyanka Lewis, 37, said she went to the police station after learning her son was missing on Monday and begged officers to help the family search the dark neighborhood streets.

"They said, 'All we can do is put in a missing persons report and leave it up to Homicide (Division)," Lewis said.

Lewis said the last time she saw her son was Friday, as he was boarding a bus to visit his father across town, as he did every weekend.

"I wish I hugged him. He's 18, he's out of that hugging stage," she said. "Now I just feel bad that I didn't hug him."

A neighbor, Harold Augustine, said he joined the family in searching for Christian Monday night. The family had gone door-to-door seeking help, neighbors said.

"We searched all last night, in every abandoned house around here," Augustine said.

After a neighbor spotted Christian's sneakers peeking out from the bushes, "We all just pulled back," Augustine said. "We was all crying, shedding a little tear. I went to shaking. That was real cold, he was a little boy."

Security officers at the Mahalia Jackson Early Childhood & Learning Center did not see the body when they walked the perimeter of the school Monday and Tuesday as they do every day, said Stanley Smith, interim superintendent of the Orleans Parish School Board.

The center, which has students in prekindergarten and kindergarten and also includes a health center, library and some state offices, was on lockdown throughout Tuesday, Smith said.

"The kids are not aware of anything going on," Smith said, noting the school had immediately notified parents of the murder investigation via text message, voicemail and email.

Footage from the school's surveillance system, which Smith said is recording 24 hours a day, seven days a week, will be turned over to police to aid the investigation.

Anyone with information on this crime can contact Homicide Detective Barret Morton at 504.658.5300 or Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111.

Deezmaker 3D Printer Store opens in Pasadena, will sell you a slice of the future for $600

Deezmaker 3D Printer Store opens in Pasadena, will sell you a slice of the future for $600

If the MakerBot store in Manhattan is the East coast's vanguard for 3D printer stores, Deezmaker's just-opened store in Pasadena, California is the equivalent pioneer for the West coast crew. As of now, you can walk through the doors at 290 North Hill Avenue and at least see the store's own Bukobot printer in action, even if high demand through Kickstarter pre-orders precludes walk-in sales for the next few weeks. When you can make that impulse purchase, however, you'll find the Bukobot at a relatively cheap $600 and may see some alternatives during your visit. Store owner and Bukobot creator Diego Porqueras stresses to Ars Technica that he wants Deezmaker lasting for the long haul, and he may have chosen just the right area to make that happen -- the shop is a stone's throw from the experimenters (and simply curious) at Caltech, NASA's JPL and Pasadena City College. No matter how it all shakes out, we're hoping that the two near-simultaneous store openings are the start of a larger trend that takes 3D printing into the mainstream.

Broken After Battle: Combating Brain-Related Injuries In War (VIDEO)

"After more than a decade of war the U.S. military cannot precisely diagnose concussion-related brain injuries resulting from the bomb blasts that are the most common cause of combat casualties," HuffPost's Pulitzer Prize winning reporter David Wood wrote in a recent article.

And without a precise diagnosis or understanding of traumatic brain injury (TBI), treatment offered mainly consists of rest and reassurance. As a result, thousands of Americans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan over the last decade may have been injured, but were not diagnosed properly. Or at all.

Wood joined HuffPost Live's Alicia Menendez and retired Lieutenant Jason Gladney, Michael Wilmore, Director of Clinical Affairs at the Defense and Veteran Brain Injury Center, and Dr. Jam Ghajar, a neurosurgeon and founder of the Brain Trauma Research Laboratory and the Brain Trauma Foundation to discuss TBI.

Watch the full segment at HuffPost Live.

Getting The Most From Your Next Home Improvement Project ...

There are a variety of reasons why home improvements are undertaken. Some people get bored with the look of their house. Other people do it because they want to increase their property value. But many people embark on home improvement projects because they enjoy the satisfaction of doing things themselves. Whatever your reason is to improve a home, here is some advice to get you started.

Installing captivating hand railings will improve your home?s look and increase safety. You can install them in your entry way, on sidewalks or on your deck. Railings can especially help older individuals and children. You can build or buy railings in a variety of materials, including copper, steel, wrought iron, cables, wood and even glass. There is no reason not to install hand railings in your home because they can improve country and style.

Never undertake a new home improvement project without first ascertaining the expected costs of all fag and materials. Many homeowners grossly underestimate the money involved in improvements and this mistake can be very costly. Get a number of estimates and be certain to plan for complications.

Organizing your kitchen cabinets can help create a more efficient workspace for you in the kitchen. Remove any items that are out-dated or no longer used often like expired canned goods and old spices. Wipe down the shelving, then lay down fresh lining paper. You can then group together things when you place your items back in. You will no longer have a hard time finding anything, since what you need is always right there.

There is a fun home improvement project that the whole family can do. Planting a garden somewhere in your front yard has been shown to increase the value of a home. What?s more, it won?t cause serious problems if done incorrectly.

Consider using bamboo when putting down new hardwood floor. Bamboo floors are durable and are quite popular. Since it?s durable, it can withstand things dropping on it without much damage. It is very strong, which makes it suitable for areas with high traffic. It also stands up to humidity and moisture well, making it saint for a kitchen or bathroom.

In many cases, just a small project can make a large different to a home?s value. When you are considering selling your home, think about the small things that you can easily do to improve it. For example, give your house, inside and out, a fresh coat of paint. This will only cost you about two hundred dollars, but can increase your home?s value significantly.

Roller and aluminum shutters are good options for home value and property security. Adding aluminum or rolling shutters can be a very wise investment if you live in a hurricane prone area or if you need to leave your home unattended for long periods.

Home improvement is something that applies to everyone from time to time. We might all start with different intentions and reasons, but ultimately, we all have some motivating factor. Regardless of whether it?s for appearance or extra money, home improvement can benefit anybody.

An Eternity by Archibald MacLeish

There is no dusk to be,
There is no dawn that was,
Only there's now, and now,
And the wind in the grass.

Days I remember of
Now in my heart, are now;
Days that I dream will bloom
White the peach bough.

Dying shall never be
Now in the windy grass;
Now under shooken leaves
Death never was.

90 seconds at 9 am: European divisions re-emerge over banking union and new bailouts; Portugal drops austerity-driven tax hike after popular revolt; NZ$ ever higher

Here's my summary of the key news overnight in 90 seconds at 9 am, including news fears about Europe's debt crisis are re-emerging after divisions were laid bare again over the weekend about how to form a single Eurozone banking union.

Germany and France disagreed about the timetable for a single banking union and there were also doubts about the need for Europe to bail out Spain and Italy. See more here at Bloomberg.

Financial markets want news of a bailout for Spain sooner rather than later so the European Central Bank can unleash its 'Big Bazooka' of unlimited bond buying after a country asks for a bailout. However, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble muddied the waters after he said Spain did not necessarily need a bailout.

Elsewhere, Portugal is abandoning plans to increase its social security tax from 11% to 18% after a popular revolt last week saw hundreds of thousands of citizens stage marches throughout the country. The tax increase was required as part of austerity plans required for Portugal's bailout programme. See more here at The Guardian.

Also, Greece is struggling to come up with 11.5 billion euros of cuts required for its next bailout. It is now in its 5th year of depression with unemployment over 25% and the main anti-bailout and anti-Euro party Syriza is now ahead in opinion polls.

The 'troika' of donors negotiating Greece's next bailout say they have found a 20 billion euro hold in Greece's budget plans.

All of this uncertainty about Europe, along with worries about growth in China and America, makes our currency look more attractive, as does unlimited money printing by central banks in the Northern Hemisphere. The euro fell last week for the first week in six weeks after figures showed the Eurozone economy weakening.

The New Zealand dollar is near a one year high on a Trade Weighted Index basis of around 73.7 after it was firm at 82.8 USc and 51 pence over the weekend. It also rose to 63.9 euro cents and is over 79.4 Australian cents.

No matter what I talk about, I always get back to baseball: GameThread Jays @ Rays

The quote is from Connie Make, but seems to fit me, no matter what the conversation is, sooner or later I'll turn it back to baseball. But lately, everyone I run into seems to want to tell me how bad the Blue Jays have been. I KNOW.

Anyway, today we get to watch Chad Jenkins make his first major league start. I interested to see how he does. Hopefully he, and the Jays, can keep the Rays under double digits today. It would be nice to keep us within a touchdown or so of the lead.

Some offence would be ok too. I'm kind of feeling sorry for JP, it looks like he could have used more rehab time. He's only had 2 singles since coming back from his injury. Adam Lind has been slumping too, he has more triples (2) than home runs (1) in September. Hard to believe. I guess you could throw a dart at the starting lineup and you'd be likely to hit a player slumping, and put him out of the lineup for the rest of the season. Lawrie's hitting .231 this month. Johnson .196. Escobar .229. Davis .227. Rasmus .231 with 1 home run.

Starting pitchers:

Come on Jays, let's win one, please.

You know the rules, it has been a long season, but lets keep things civil.

Go Jays.
