Kardashian for Senate? Fake reporter says so

Playing a fake news reporter, comic Dan Hodapp interviews an unsuspecting New Yorker in Washington Square Park,

By Courtney Garcia, msnbc.com contributor

Proving not only that people will believe anything a reporter says, but also that a lot of folks don?t pay much attention to current events, one fake journalist has fooled New Yorkers into buying some pretty fanciful stories.

?Kim Kardashian has announced her candidacy for the California State Senate, what do you think about that?? supposed reporter Mike Holland, played by comic Dan Hodapp, asks one man.

The man, surprisingly, retorts, ?I?d vote for her if I was in California.?

Holland later informs another man that President Obama has ?fired the U.S. Senate,? and asks for thoughts on the matter.

?Actually, I hadn?t even heard that, embarrassingly enough,? the guy responds.

The show, titled ?Fake News Prank,? is part of a larger series known as ?Prank News Network? on humor site Jest.com. According to editor-in-chief Jeff Rubin, his team came up with the idea to dupe uninformed New Yorkers ?when they saw how little people actually knew about the Occupy Wall Street movement.

"During one of our writing meetings, we were discussing how most people probably have a strong opinion on Occupy Wall Street, even if they've lost track of the story and no longer know what's actually going on,? Rubin told msnbc.com. ?That seemed inherently funny to us. We talked it through for a while, and ultimately ended up with the idea of asking people for their opinions on stories that they couldn't possibly know anything about?-- because they were fake?-- and seeing how they responded."

Subjects on the show range from pop culture nonsense like the Vatican granting football quarterback Tim Tebow sainthood to faux breaking news that Germany invaded Poland. Rubin says a few people were initially skeptical, but became convinced by Holland?s straightforward demeanor.

As evidenced in the final cut, people fall for the fake news often. Some targets even pretended that they were previously up to speed on the invented situations.

?The Germany and Poland thing is still pretty fresh,? a young woman observes. ?I guess we?re going to see how it rides out.?

Rubin says the show isn?t intended to be a criticism of the media, though he realizes people might interpret it that way. More so, it?s an aim to create original and imaginative online entertainment that relates to viewers and the issues being discussed in the social community. The videos provide a quick and witty spin on daily news, and are often produced in less than a day?s time.

?That's about how long you have before people have moved on from that story and onto something else,? Rubin added. "There are so many choices for online entertainment that it's not enough to just be funny, you also have to make sure that your content has a point of view that people relate to and will want to share with friends.?

Would you be fooled? Tell us on Facebook.

Laser-scanning bot builds 3-D map of ancient Roman sewers

10 hrs.

Roman archaeologists are using an interesting new tool to map and study one of the ancient city's little-appreciated features: Its sewers. They've deployed a?remotely?controlled rover called an "archeo-robot" to help them create a detailed and complete map of the extensive waterways.

Ancient Rome's "cloaca maxima," Latin for greatest or largest sewer, was a marvel at the time of its use, permitting great quantities of waste water to flow away from the city center. It still functions today, draining rainwater from the historic Forum area of Rome.

A team was recently brought in to study and map the main sewer and its several secondary tunnels. To do it properly, they decided to use a little remote bot equipped with high-definition cameras, atmospheric sensors and a laser-scanning system that would capture the pipes and stones in 3-D. This will allow them to get very exact dimensions as well as an explorable model.

The results are quite cool-looking, and should be of utility to scholars and historians who have often wondered about the cloaca maxima and its construction. You can see a short video of some of the data they've collected here.

The group doing the work is called Indissoluble, and they've placed much more information regarding the archeo-robot on the project's site.

(AP) ? The Arkansas Supreme Court struck down the state's execution law Friday, calling it unconstitutional.

In a split decision, the high court sided with 10 death row inmates who argued that, under Arkansas' constitution, only the Legislature can set execution policy. Legislators in 2009 voted to give that authority to the Department of Correction.

"It is evident to this court that the Legislature has abdicated its responsibility and passed to the executive branch, in this case the (Arkansas Department of Correction), the unfettered discretion to determine all protocol and procedures, most notably the chemicals to be used, for a state execution," Justice Jim Gunter wrote in the majority opinion.

Two justices of the seven-member court dissented, arguing that the correction department's discretion is not "unfettered" because it is bound by the federal and state constitutions that guard against cruel and unusual punishment.

"In addition, Arkansas is left no method of carrying out the death penalty in cases where it has been lawfully imposed," Justice Karen Baker wrote in the dissent.

The 2009 law says a death sentence is to be carried out by lethal injection of one or more chemicals that the director of the Department of Correction chooses. The law also says that in the event that the lethal injection law is found to be unconstitutional, death sentences will be carried out by electrocution.

It wasn't immediately clear what the court's ruling will mean for the 40 men on death row in Arkansas. There aren't any pending executions, and the state hasn't put anyone to death since 2005, in part because of legal challenges like this one.

Death row inmate Jack Harold Jones Jr. sued the head of the correction department in 2010. Nine other inmates later joined the suit, asking that the law be struck down.

The state, meanwhile, asked the court to free up several executions it had halted because of this lawsuit.

Josh Lee, an attorney for the death row inmates who challenged the law, declined to comment Friday.

During oral arguments last week, Lee said the state would have two options if the court found the law unconstitutional.

"The Legislature could either choose to stick with the 1983 statute, which everybody concedes is constitutional, or the Legislature could decide we want to amend it." Lee said last week.

A spokesman for Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

The state adopted lethal injection as its method of capital punishment in 1983. There have been legal challenges to the way the state kills its condemned prisoners since then. In 2009, in the midst of a legal battle over lethal injection, the state Legislature passed the law that the court struck down Friday.

Joseph Cordi, an attorney for the state, told the Supreme Court last week that he thought the state would fall back on the 1983 law if the court struck down the entire 2009 statute.

Prisons spokeswoman Dina Tyler said Friday that she hasn't seen the ruling.

New cause of spinal muscular atrophy described

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? Over 15 years ago, researchers linked a defect in a gene called survival motor neuron -- or SMN -- with the fatal disease spinal muscular atrophy. Because SMN had a role in assembling the intracellular machinery that processes genetic material, it was assumed that faulty processing was to blame.

Now, University of North Carolina scientists have discovered that this commonly held assumption is wrong and that a separate role of the SMN gene -- still not completely elucidated -- is likely responsible for the disease's manifestations. The research appears June 21, 2012 in the journal Cell Reports.

"There are a number of gene therapies and RNA therapies in the pipeline that may still work regardless of the underlying cause of the disease," said senior study author Gregory Matera, PhD, professor in the departments of biology and genetics and a member of the Program in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in the UNC School of Medicine.

"But if those approaches don't pan out, it could be that the therapy isn't reaching the precise tissues where defective SMN is most damaging," he added. "Our result is exciting because we now have a starting point to uncover what is truly causing this disease so we can more effectively treat it."

Spinal muscular atrophy is characterized by muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy) resulting from the progressive loss of motor neurons in the spinal cord. The disease is due to a partial loss of function in the SMN gene that normally loads up the "splicing" machinery with the proteins necessary for cutting and pasting the cell's genetic instructions together. Cells that completely lack SMN fail to correctly generate and process the genetic blueprint for the proteins needed to carry out the rest of the body's activities.

But in addition to roles in splicing, SMN has been implicated in a number of other processes that occur only in specific tissues, such as the formation of the junction between muscle and nerve cells or the maintenance of muscle architecture. Thus Matera and his colleagues wondered if defective splicing was really responsible for spinal muscular atrophy or if one of these tissue-specific roles was the cause.

In this study, the researchers investigated whether they could disconnect SMN's "primary" role in splicing from the physical characteristics typical of spinal muscular atrophy. To do so, they first created fruit flies carrying the same genetic mutation that causes the disease. The mutant flies didn't survive to the larval stage and showed significant defects in locomotion as well as reductions in those important splicing proteins.

But when the researchers re-introduced functional SMN, only the larval lethality and locomotor defects -- not the level of splicing factors --were rescued. Therefore, this splicing function of SMN is not a major contributor to spinal muscular atrophy. Right now Matera and colleagues are using a number of highly sophisticated "-omics" methods such as proteomics and RNomics to pin down the real culprit.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. Study co-authors from UNC were Kavita Praveen and Ying Wen.

Been a lurker here for awhile. So thought I would share my story. I am married to a wonderful woman. We have been married for about 6 years. Three beautiful children. We met about 6 and a half years ago in a chatroom. She had to stay late at school that day and I called out of work bc I was sick. So we were both online to meet each other when we normally wouldn't have been. It progressed to emails then to phone calls then finally face to face. Mind you we lived about 600 miles apart at the time. We already knew we wanted to marry before we even met face to face. So about 6 months after initial contact,we were married. It was the first serious relationship we had both had. I was practically inexperienced sexually except for two encounters and she was a virgin. And here we are. Almost seven years later. The road has not always been perfect. We have had our arguments. but I can both say we are still happily married and loyal to each other. we both don't believe in divorce bc of our religion and the truth is, even without religions influence, its very hard to imagine life without each other and our children. I always tell her I want to be old together with lots of memories, unlike most marriages today that end in divorce. we have a lot of the same interests. can't complain about the sex aspect. She is a very jealous women, but then most Hispanic women are. I don't give her any reason to be jealous but a lot of the males in her family have cheated on their wives so I guess that explains it. she said she trusts me but its other women she doesn't trust around me lol. so anyways to sum it up, just thought I would share with the forum that there's that special someone out there for everyone and if you play your cards right, you can also work on your happily ever after.

Rihanna Adds Animated Film To Her Growing Hollywood Resume

Singer will appear alongside Jim Parsons in 'Happy Smekday!' based on a novel by Adam Rex.
By Jocelyn Vena

Rihanna

Rihanna battled some bad aliens in "Battleship," but now it seems she'll be tackling a much friendlier extraterrestrial life form in her animated flick, "Happy Smekday!" She's set to play the lead alongside "Big Bang Theory" Emmy-winner Jim Parsons.

The flick, based on Adam Rex's book "The True Meaning of Smekday," follows an alien race who come to Earth to hide away from their enemies. When one of the aliens accidentally spills the beans about their hideout to the bad guys, he must go on the run with a teenage girl. The twosome then goes on a road trip through a dystopian America, learning about humanity along the way.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is slated for a 2014 release. "Antz" and "Over the Hedge" director Tim Johnson will helm the DreamWorks Animation project, with "Get Smart" screenwriters Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember penning the script.

It's just another film credit for Ri, who has begun her transition from singer to singer/actress. Ever since her appearance in "Battleship," roles have been steadily coming her way.

"I got a few scripts, actually, a lot of incredible roles," she told MTV News recently. "Some of which I felt were a little too big for me, being that I never did a movie. So I wanted to really get my feet wet, try it, see what it was like and know how I wanted to move from there. I'm really glad 'Battleship' turned out to be the first one."

She was recently spotted on the set of "End of the World," confirming her long-rumored cameo in the Seth Rogen comedy.

She shot down chatter that she would play Whitney Houston in a biopic of her life, and her rep recently denied rumors that she would be in the next "Fast and The Furious."

Kentucky doctor is the AMA's new president-elect

(AP) ? An internal medicine doctor from Kentucky is the American Medical Association's new president-elect.

The nation's largest physicians group says Dr. Ardis Hoven will take office as president-elect in June 2013. She'll become the third woman to lead the association when she becomes president in 2014.

Hoven ran unopposed for president-elect and was named during the group's annual policy-making meeting. She is from Lexington and is also an infectious disease specialist.

Denver psychiatrist Jeremy Lazarus is ending his yearlong term as president-elect and officially becomes AMA president on Tuesday evening.

An AMA statement Monday said Hoven has served on the AMA's Board of Trustees and is a former president of the Kentucky Medical Association.

The AMA's annual five-day meeting began Saturday.

Good News: Obama Administration Tells Egyptian Military to Cede Power to Islamists or Face Withdrawal of Funding

I forget, is it still the "Arab Spring"?

Worried US tells Egypt's military to cede power

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration warned Egypt's military leaders on Monday to speedily hand over power or risk losing billions of dollars in U.S. military and economic aid to the country.

As Egypt's Islamist candidate claimed victory in a presidential run-off, Pentagon and State Department officials expressed concern with a last-minute decree by Egypt's ruling military council giving itself sweeping authority to maintain its grip on power and subordinate the nominal head of state. The move followed last week's dissolution of parliament by an Egyptian court.

"This is a critical moment in Egypt, and the world is watching closely," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters. "We are particularly concerned by decisions that appear to prolong the military's hold on power."

...Nuland said Egypt's military authorities need to "restore popular and international confidence in the democratic transition process" by ensuring an inclusive constitution-writing process, a democratically elected parliament and a swift handover of power to a civilian government.

I'm no historian, but would guess that -- for any given state or region -- an election that leaves Islamists in power is pretty much the last election that will get held.

And, as an aside, it turns out that Pamela Geller was right all along.

Fla. teen guilty of battery in flame attack

(AP) ? A teenager accused of orchestrating an attack that left his classmate in flames was convicted Tuesday of aggravated battery after jurors decided against more serious charges.

Matthew "Zeke" Bent faced a charge of attempted second-degree murder after prosecutors say he offered friends money in 2009 to harm Michael Brewer, who was doused in rubbing alcohol and set on fire. The six jurors, who deliberated for just over a day, had the option of finding him guilty of a lesser offense.

Brewer suffered severe burns over 65 percent of his body but survived after leaping into an apartment complex swimming pool.

The Brewer family had been in court for much of the trial, but weren't present Tuesday.

"The Brewers respect the jury's decision. Now it's time for Michael to get on with his life. ...And today he has closure," said their attorney, Jeanne Brady.

Prosecutors echoed Brady.

"Michael Brewer spent the last three years healing from his physical wounds. And now he's moving on with his emotional wounds," said Kal Le Var Evans, an assistant state attorney.

A defense attorney said the three years that Bent has been in jail awaiting trial was already a hefty penalty.

"He thought that three years for his involvement was quite substantial," said defense attorney Perry Thurston, Jr. "He's disappointed."

Bent and two other teens were charged with second-degree attempted murder, which carries a prison sentence of as many as 30 years. Denver "D.C." Jarvis, 17, and 18-year-old Jesus Mendez pleaded no contest earlier and were sentenced to eight and 11 years behind bars, respectively.

Bent faces a maximum term of 15 years at his sentencing hearing on July 23. His lawyers said they plan to file an appeal.

Bent initially intended to plead no contest as well, but backed out at the last minute and opted for trial. His attorneys insisted he was not the instigator of the attack and never intended to hurt Brewer.

Prosecutors had urged jurors not to let Bent sidestep guilt because he had others carry out the attack.

"Don't let him get away with letting other people do his dirty work for him," Assistant State Attorney Maria Schneider said of the defendant during closing arguments Monday. "Matthew Bent was the reason why this crime happened. He was offering people money to beat Michael, not to scare Michael."

Defense attorney Johnny McCray said the state was overreaching with its prosecution of Bent.

"An innocent child doesn't have to be convicted to bring justice to Michael Brewer," McCray told the jury that began deliberations Monday afternoon.

The defense did not call a single witness, and Bent did not testify.

Brewer testified that he stayed home from school the day of the attack because he was afraid of Bent. The two had gotten into a dispute over a marijuana pipe that Bent was trying to force Brewer to buy, Brewer testified. Bent then allegedly tried to steal a bicycle belonging to Brewer's father, which led to Bent's arrest.

"I was afraid," Brewer testified. "I thought something was going to happen to me."

After school the day of the attack, Brewer decided to visit a friend at a nearby apartment complex. On the way he encountered a group of boys including Bent, Jarvis and Mendez.

The boys had found a jug of rubbing alcohol by chance on a low wall alongside the complex, and Jarvis testified that Bent offered him $5 or $10 to pour it on Brewer. Other boys said Bent offered the group $5 each to punch Brewer.

Jarvis did douse Brewer and Mendez then flicked a lighter he was holding, sparking the blaze. In a statement to police, Mendez said he never expected the liquid to ignite so explosively.

Brewer spent months in the hospital, undergoing seven skin graft operations, followed by months more of rehabilitation and physical therapy. He testified that he still feels pain in his back and legs but said he remembers little after diving into the pool.

"I started getting really cold, and then I started seeing blur," Brewer said.

Exclusive 'Breaking Bad' pic: Is Jesse worried?

Frank Ockenfels / AMC

Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman on "Breaking Bad."

By Anna Chan

While many can't wait for "Breaking Bad" to return next month, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) doesn't look so happy about it.

In a photo that AMC shared exclusively with us, the young meth cooker seems a bit concerned. And why shouldn't he be? (SPOILER ALERT!) Last season, he helped his former chemistry teacher and now meth-cooking mastermind Walter White (Bryan Cranston) attempt to kill boss Gus, whom Jesse had been feeling rather loyal to in season four. (Walt was eventually successful in taking care of New Mexico's meth kingpin.) Jesse also later helped Walt burn down their top-secret, multimillion dollar hidden meth lab.

Could that sketchy-looking, rundown location Jesse's pictured in be a possible spot for the new lab? Guess we'll have to wait and see. But one thing's for sure: The duo will need a new place to cook their product.

"Breaking Bad" kicks off season five on July 15 at 10 p.m. on AMC. Immediately after the season premiere, the network is debuting "Small Town Security," an unscripted series about a family-run private investigation company.

What are you most excited for in the new season of "Breaking Bad"? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Based on everything we've seen so far (namely, one teaser trailer), Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" video takes the fairy tale concept to new heights, putting Perry inside a fantastical world and very literally closing the book on her Teenage Dream run.

And while we won't get to see the full video until Tuesday (June 19) night — when it premieres at 7:53 p.m. ET on MTV as part of "MTV First: Katy Perry" — we've got another exclusive sneak peek for you today, one that shows the dark side of the usually sunny California Gurl.

Check out another pic at MTV's Buzzworthy blog!

In this new still from the video, a black-clad Katy (with noir-ish hair to match) clutches a lantern as she makes her way through what appears to be a labyrinth ... though we're still not sure where she's going or who she's searching for. But it bears mention that she looks fantastic — and kinda spooky — while doing it.

We won't know the full story until Tuesday, when Perry reveals the final chapter in the Teenage Dream story. It's certainly been a fairy tale up to this point, but will she get her happy ending? Tune in to find out.

Check out another pic at MTV's Style blog!

The "Wide Awake" video makes its worldwide debut on MTV Tuesday, June 19, at 7:53 p.m. ET as part of "MTV First: Katy Perry," with an exclusive 30-minute interview with Katy and MTV's Sway Calloway to follow on MTV.com. She'll reveal all about the song, which she wrote for her upcoming 3-D concert film, "Katy Perry: Part of Me."

Her new video will also debut on VH1, Logo and TeenNick, in addition to MTV.com, VH1.com and LOGOtv.com. Katy's fans around the globe will also be able to stream it online at KatyPerry.MTV.com.

New course at Reno air races debuts to praise

(AP) ? Pilots offered praise this week for a new course designed to keep them farther away from spectators at the Reno National Championship Air Races after last year's accident that killed 11 people.

Pilots who flew the course for the first time during a training seminar this week ahead of the Sept. 12-16 races reacted positively to it, said Reno Air Racing Association President Mike Houghton. The repositioning of several pylons moves the course about 150 feet farther away from spectators and helps to ease the gravitational pull on pilots competing in the fastest of six aircraft classes by smoothing out some turns, he said.

A modified World War II P-51 Mustang crashed in front of VIP boxes last September at the Reno National Championship Air Races, killing 11 people and injuring about 70 others.

"I don't think it'll have an impact on speeds. (It'll affect) just the G-force pilots feel," Houghton said. "Every change we've made has taken safety to the next level, and this is one of those steps."

Pilot Steven Hinton, who races in the Unlimited class, praised the changes in a Facebook post Thursday.

"Had a great time at (the seminar) and the new course felt good! 89 more days till the races," he wrote.

The competition at Reno Stead Airport is the only event of its kind in the world, with planes flying wing-tip-to-wing tip around an oval pylon track, sometimes just 50 feet off the ground and at speeds of over 500 mph. This week's seminar, which drew nearly 50 rookies and veterans, for the first time offered special training to provide a feel for the gravitational pull pilots will experience when racing.

Pilot Jimmy Leeward, 74, was traveling at 530 mph when his P-51 Mustang experienced a significant event that caused the plane to pitch skyward while making a turn, then roll and slam into the ground nose first near box seats. Investigators said instruments from the aircraft showed the plane exceeded 9 Gs, and that appears to have incapacitated the pilot as blood rushed from his brain.

Houghton said the new course is expected to reduce the G-force on pilots in the fastest classes from roughly 3 to 2. It's difficult for people to maintain awareness at 5 Gs. Average roller coasters expose riders to about 2 to 3 Gs, but only for brief moments.

The changes are in line with safety recommendations made by the National Transportation Safety Board after last year's crash.

Pilot Eric Zine of Los Angeles, who competes in the biplane class, thinks the changes will make the event safer.

"Last year's crash was a one-in-a-million thing that happened," said Zine, a SkyWest Airlines pilot. "I think we took a safe event and made it safer (with the changes)."

Rod Hightower, president of the Experimental Aircraft Association, said he enjoyed flying the new course.

"It's a dangerous sport and the risk is there," he said. "But the whole industry worked well with regulatory agencies in coming up with positive changes. We try to move the safety bar up and up."

The cause of last year's crash is still under investigation, and the NTSB is expected to release a final report on it later this year.

This week's training seminar offered pilots a chance to hone their skills before the September event, which attracts the world's top racing pilots.

Houghton said his association is trying to raise money to cover a $1.7 million increase in insurance costs after last year's crash. The organization previously paid $300,000 for insurance.

"We're a $5 million-a-year organization, and that's a significant bump for us," he said, adding a committee has been formed to solicit donations from sponsors and local businesses.

French Socialists win parliament majority

French President Francois Hollande's Socialists won a resounding parliamentary majority on Sunday, strengthening his hand as he presses euro zone paymaster Germany to support debt-laden states weighed down by austerity cuts and ailing banks.

    3. Greek vote only buys some time in widening euro crisis
    4. In Egypt, little enthusiasm for presidential finalists
    5. Hidden Planet: Go inside North Korea

The Socialist Party and its affiliates secured 307 seats in the parliamentary election runoff, according to the final count for mainland France, comfortably more than the 289 needed for a majority in the 577-seat National Assembly.

The left-wing triumph means Hollande, elected in May, won't need to rely on the environmentalist Greens, who won 16 seats, or the Communist-dominated Left Front, with 10 deputies, to pass laws. The center-left already controls the upper house of parliament, the Senate.

"This gives power and a backbone to the government," said Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici, calling the result a vote of confidence in Hollande's government that would enable it to forge ahead with its economic and euro zone policies.

"Europe's future is at stake in the weeks ahead," he said.

The mainstream conservatives, who oppose Hollande's plans to raise taxes on the rich, won 224 seats.

The far-right achieved a breakthrough, winning three seats and giving the National Front a voice in parliament for the first time since the mid-1980s, after an anti-euro presidential campaign by party leader Marine Le Pen struck a chord in a nation struggling with 10 percent unemployment.

Le Pen narrowly lost her race in a working-class northern town, but her 22-year-old niece, Marion Marechal Le Pen, granddaughter of the anti-immigrant party's founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, was elected in the southern town of Carpentras. Lawyer Gilbert Collard, a non-member who was chairman of Marine Le Pen's support committee, and estranged former party member Jacques Bompard won the other two seats in the south.

The leftward swing gives the Socialists more power than they have ever held as Hollande pushes for new tools to stimulate growth in the sickly euro zone and a European banking union that would protect depositors and states if banks fail.

Political turmoil in Greece, where parties that support the country's international bailout were heading for a slim win on Sunday that leaves many problems unresolved, is piling pressure on Europe's leaders to act to contain the bloc's debt crisis at a summit later this month.

Sunday's victory may help Hollande secure parliamentary backing for steps towards a euro zone fiscal union that Berlin is demanding as a condition for agreeing to his push for a growth pact and reforms to improve financial stability.

"It's a much bigger majority than expected," said political analyst Mariette Sineau. "It can only reinforce Hollande's position internationally rather than having a weak majority and being hostage to the Greens and Left Front."

The Socialist leader flies to Mexico on Monday for a Group of 20 summit that will be dominated by the euro zone's woes as a rift with the bloc's paymaster Germany over how to resolve the crisis has sparked a rare public squabble.

PARTY UNITY OVER EUROPE KEY
Hollande, a pro-European social democrat, has broken with a Franco-German power duopoly established under his predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy and is siding with southern euro zone states, calling for more flexibility on deficit targets.

He also wants a European banking union giving the European Central Bank power to supervise cross-border banks, with a joint deposit guarantee and a resolution fund, intended to ensure that bank collapses hit shareholders before taxpayers.

With the right now severely weakened, Hollande's strong hand will be a boon as he readies a wave of legislation for the weeks ahead to raise taxes in line with his tax-and-spend program and ratify a European Union fiscal discipline pact.

As well as avoiding dependence on Eurosceptical or conservative lawmakers, Sunday's win will leave Hollande's mainly social democratic and pro-Europe cabinet intact.

All senior ministers, including Moscovici and Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, won their parliamentary races.

Ayrault said the government would throw its energy into bolstering public finances, stimulating growth and bringing down unemployment, in the euro zone as well as France.

"The goal is to shift Europe towards growth and protect the euro zone from speculation. The task before us is immense," he said.

Hollande, who can count on the backing of his Greens allies in the lower house, will need every parliament vote he can get if a public finance audit due by the end of June shows that he must slow down his spending promises to meet France's deficit goals.

One key supporter, his former partner Segolene Royal, who ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 2007, was beaten on Sunday in the western city of La Rochelle by a left-wing rebel backed by Hollande's current partner, Valerie Trierweiler.

Royal's defeat, making her ineligible for a cabinet post, creates a headache for Hollande, who will need to find a face-saving role for her, especially after a tweet by Trierweiler backing her rival set off a media firestorm.

Another big loser was centrist Francois Bayrou who was punished by center-right voters for having thrown his support behind Hollande at the last minute. Bayrou lost a seat he had held since 1986, leaving the political center virtually devoid of a voice after his third presidential bid ended in a crushing fifth place finish in April.

Hollande will still have to work to keep his party united and rally Eurosceptics among the Socialists behind economic and European policies that may be unpopular with the public, such as Germany's demand for deeper euro zone political integration.

Ayrault said earlier on Sunday that any steps towards European federalism would need to ensure that national parliaments provided oversight.

Hollande lacks the two-thirds majority he would need to make constitutional changes that would be required for example to give EU institutions more control over national budgets, a key concession demanded by Berlin in return for more fiscal support.

"Hollande will certainly feel emboldened to carry things through and negotiate at the European Council," said Christopher Bickerton, associate political science professor at Sciences Po.

"Momentum is building for him. Whether he can garner that to push forward his agenda in Europe is the most crucial question."

Egypt votes for president to succeed Mubarak

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptians on Saturday voted to choose between a conservative Islamist and Hosni Mubarak's ex-prime minister in a presidential runoff once billed as the country's long-awaited shift to democracy but now clouded by pessimism over the future.

Whoever wins after two days of voting, Egypt's military rulers will remain ultimately at the helm, a sign of how Egypt's revolution has gone astray 16 months after millions forced the authoritarian Mubarak to step down in the name of freedom.

"We are forced to make this choice. We hate them both," said Sayed Zeinhom at Cairo's Boulak el-Dakrour, a densely populated maze of narrow dirt alleys and shoddily built houses. Mahmoud el-Fiqi, waiting with him at a polling center, offered, "Egypt is confused."

The race between Ahmed Shafiq, a career air force officer like Mubarak, and the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi, a U.S.-trained engineer, has deeply divided the country after the stunning uprising that ousted Mubarak after 29 years in office, and left many disillusioned about the elections' legitimacy.

Many voters felt that the choice no longer even mattered after a court ruling this week effectively ensured that the military generals who have ruled since Mubarak's ouster will continue to be in power.

The generals took over legislative powers after Egypt's highest court on Thursday ordered the dissolution of the parliament elected just six months ago, and the military made a de facto declaration of martial law, despite earlier promises to hand over power to the new president by July 1. With no constitution or parliament, the president's powers are likely to be determined by a military with power to arrest civilians for crimes as minor as traffic obstruction.

To the activists behind the 18 days of mass protests that toppled Mubarak's regime, the election seemed a cruel joke, that crushed their dream of a new Egypt ? free, democratic and rid of all traces of the old system.

"The revolution will continue and restore the right of those who died in the uprising," said Ziad el-Oleimi, an iconic figure of the anti-Mubarak revolt in which nearly 900 protesters were killed. "This election is essentially for the selection of a new dictator."

That frustration gave rise to a movement among some to either boycott the election or cast invalid ballots.

Contractor Mohammed Ahmed Kamel, a resident of the poor Cairo district of Warraq, crossed out both Shafiq's and Morsi's names in protest on his ballot. "We don't want Islamists and we don't want old regime," he said.

In most polling stations observed by The Associated Press, voter turnout appeared light, with lines considerably shorter than in the first round of elections. There were no official turnout figures, and in districts known to be strongholds for both candidates, voters came out in force and braced the long waits and heat.

Few voters showed the sense of celebration visible in previous, post-Mubarak votes: anxiety prevailed. Some said they felt bitter that their "revolution" had stalled, feared that whoever wins protests will erupt, or were deeply suspicion that the political system was being manipulated.

Others said they were voting against a candidate as much as for a favorite. Anti-Shafiq voters said they wanted to stop a figure they fear will perpetuate Mubarak's regime; anti-Morsi voters feared he would hand the country over to Brotherhood domination to turn it into an Islamic state.

With the fear of new authoritarianism in the future, some said they were choosing whoever they believed would be easiest to eventually force out with new protests.

"We are afraid Egypt will turn into a religious state. Even though Shafiq is not the best one, we want him to maintain the civil state," said Marsa Maher, a Christian housewife.

Mustafa Abdel-Alim, a bank employee with a mark on his forehead sometimes seen on Muslims from repeated prayer, said he wanted to keep out the Brotherhood. "If we elect Morsi ... we won't get rid of them for 100 years," he said.

Many voters are angry at the Brotherhood, which was the big winner in the parliament elections, gaining nearly half the seats, but was later accused of trying to monopolize authority. After Thursday's court ruling, others were angered by what they saw as the military's power grab.

Brotherhood supporter Amin Sayed said he had planned to boycott the vote, but changed his mind after the court ruling.

"I came to vote for the Brotherhood and the revolution and to spite the military council," he said in Imbaba, a Cairo stronghold of Islamists. "If Shafiq wins, we will return to the streets."

Shafiq, an admirer and a longtime friend of Mubarak, has campaigned on a platform of a return to stability, something that resonated with many Egyptians frustrated and fatigued by more than a year of deadly street protests, a faltering economy and surging crime.

Morsi marketed himself as a revolutionary who is fighting against the return of the old regime, promising guaranteed freedoms and an economic recovery, while softening his Islamist rhetoric in a bid to reassure liberals, minority Christians and women.

The balloting, which continues Sunday, will produce Egypt's first president since the ouster of Mubarak, who is now serving a life sentence for failing to prevent the killing of some 900 protesters during the 18-day uprising that toppled his regime. The winner will be only the fifth president since the monarchy was overthrown nearly 60 years ago.

The election is supposed to be the last stop in a turbulent transition overseen by the military generals. But even if they nominally hand over some powers to the winner, they will still hold the upper hand over the next president. The generals are likely to issue an interim constitutional declaration defining the president's powers. They will hold legislative powers, and they will likely appoint an assembly to write the permanent constitution, preserving a political role in the future.

Days before the vote, the military-appointed government also gave military police and intelligence agents the right to arrest civilians for a host of suspected crimes, which many saw as a de facto declaration of martial law. Already, the generals have been blamed for mismanaging the transition and they stand accused of killing protesters, torturing detainees and hauling at least 12,000 civilians before military courts since January 2011.

Using diplomatic language to convey Washington's concern about the latest development in longtime ally Egypt, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta emphasized to Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Egypt's military ruler, "the need to ensure a full and peaceful transition to democracy."

In their phone call Friday, Tantawi, Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years, confirmed the military's intention to transfer power to a democratically elected government by July 1, according to the U.S. Defense Department.

Unlike in earlier post-Mubarak votes when Egyptians were confident the balloting would be free of interference, many this time said they expected tampering.

"I don't think Shafiq 'could' win, I think he 'will' win," said Nagwan Gamal, a 26-year-old engineering lecturer at Cairo University who voted for Morsi. "I think there will be corruption to ensure that he wins, though I think a lot of people will vote for him."

There were no immediate reports of significant violations at the polls. But several voters became alarmed by a rumor that they were being given pens with disappearing ink so that their ballots wouldn't count.

Gamal and others underscored a widespread belief that the ruling military wants to ensure a win by the president of its choosing. The military has said it does not back either candidate. There were scuffles and even a shootout between supporters of the two candidates in several places around the country.

For many, there was a sense of voting fatigue. Egyptians have gone to the polls multiple times since Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011 ? a referendum early last year, then three months of multi-round parliamentary elections that began in November, and the first round of presidential elections last month.

"My name is Saber, which means 'patient', but my patience is gone," said Karim Saber, a 30-year-old driver who said he was saving to get married.

"The man before (Mubarak) did not do anything and whoever is succeeding him won't do anything," he said at a coffee house in the Basateen suburb south of Cairo. "I don't know what the solution is. I feel suffocated."

Outside a polling center at the Cairo suburb of Shubra el-Kheima, Sameh Mohammed declared: "I am not voting for either. They are all thieves and liars and cooperating with the military."

Mohammed, who now washes cars after his factory closed following the revolution, lashed out at the military, but said he doesn't trust the Brotherhood either. He had voted for Morsi the first round.

"They are all gambling with our lives," he said.

School teacher Mohammed Mustafa said he was voting to try to stop the return of the old regime.

"We lost this country for 30 years, and we are not ready to lose it again," he said.
